Question about a dual exhaust system.....
« on: June 27, 2008, 05:10:36 PM »
This is for an '87 SWB 2WD w/350 (TBI).

I am looking at ordering:
http://store.73-87chevytrucks.com/merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Store_Code=7&Product_Code=SGT80&Category_Code=73-87UHood

I am guessing this is produced by a member or a supporting vendor  ???

I'm looking to let the engine breathe more and give a little burble (as a proper V8 should)!

My questions are:
I am looking at using headers (shorties) and dual cats.  I have to maintain the cats in case I transfer to an area (like CT) that inspects for them. With this system, I think I can use short down-tube to a universal CAT on each side and then tie into the system, right?

Any suggestions for a choice of headers (on the cheap)?

As for sound, I want low-key, NO RASP and NO DRONE.  I have had bad results with Flowmaster sound (too raspy) but I am not familiar with Dynomax.  These are listed as the equivalent on the system shown.  My preference would be for Magnaflow (generally quieter and mellower) but wondering about this particular setup.

Thanks in advance!

Where do you live now? The 88 up shorty headers work well and you can easily make the necessary pipes to flare to them. i would install two universal cats but make them bolt on so you can eliminate them or reinstall them. the X pipe is nice along with the exhaust exiting in the rear.

I'm in SE Georgia now, but looking at heading back up to CT or VA (military).

I have already received some odd looks here as to why I wanted the cats!

As for the headers, I am just starting the search so a little help narrowing it down would be nice (brands and vendors).

PS- still wondering about the comparison of the offered mufflers listed in the link.....

I've never used the mufflers so I can't help you there. These are affordable and fit nice but you may need to grind a small clearance spot on the frame where the O2 bung is.

Went for a ride today following a general tune-up.

Noticed we have an exhaust leak in the left side bank, meaning I need to get the boss-lady to buy off on the "need" for headers in the near term!  ;D

Not sure how this will play out, but now more curious as to how the various muffler options sound that are offered.

mellow, no rasp, no drone, but with a nice tone..go with LONG glasspacks, 28 or 32" long..or double up on some shorter ones..

The package listed has options for:
"Optional Pypes Street Pro (dynomax sound), Violator ( Flowmaster sound) or Race Pro"

I was thinking about glass-paks, but it will be more cost effective to go with one of the mufflers offered with the package.  Based on nothing more than gut feeling, I was thinking the Street Pro, but I am not familiar with the "Dynomax sound".

Anyone here actually running the system linked above?

I have no experience with those mufflers, but glass packs should be $20 each..maybe $30 for 32 inchers..

any exhaust shop can or should be able to make virtually any exhaust you want in a few hours tops..The x pipe system offered in the site store may fit blazers, I really don't know..

The kit was designed around long tube headers.  We can get you cats if you like, just shoot me an email with you shipping and contact info.  Dynomax sound is similar to Magnaflows if that helps.

Here is an OLD WMV file a customer sent in.  It used 3" tails (no longer offered) and the post details what the specs were.
