1976 4x4 crew cab
« on: January 01, 2005, 01:25:00 AM »
I have a 76 4x4 crew cab that I just picked over the summer. It had not been driven in four years but what in pretty good shape. Anyway after I got it timed and on the road it ran really strong however when it shifts it shifts hard. When I was talking to the guy I bought it from he said he use to use it to haul his camper so they had done a new shift kit on it shortly before he decided to park it. My question is this...Is it ok on the tranny to shift this hard? I assume if there is a load it would not be like that but for everyday driving it will shift hard.

It shifts hard because of the shift kit.  This is perfectly normal.  It will still shift hard with a load.

So are your thoughts that for regular everyday driving that will be ok? Or should I see about getting the kit removed or adjusted?

Won't hurt it any.  Got one in mine, hasn't given me any problems at all.  I would leave it in.
