Title: TBI fuel tank:
Post by: Stewart G Griffin on September 25, 2020, 07:50:43 AM
i know this has probably been asked before, but i don't have time to do a thorough search.   Could probably do one tonight though.

Is there an aftermarket equivalent to the TBI fuel tank?   i assume you can't buy them new from GM anymore?

What fuel pump (model #) was used  in the TBI system?

Yes aftermarket tanks are offered for our trucks. The stock fuel pump is part of the fuel sender unit, or you can buy the pump separately. You can even fit a higher pressure pump directly to these units to feed a modern fuel injection engine with only minor modifications.

One popular place for tanks and fuel system parts is Tanks Inc. There are other places as well.

Alright thanks.

Now, it appears that almost any in-tank type pump  can "fit" in the sending module?   The pump appears that it is secured by two zip ties  (i hope not?)?

The fuel pump is supported by a bracket on the bottom of the sending unit and secured at the top by the short section of fuel hose that goes between the pump and the outlet tube of the sending unit. It is very secure.

Stock fuel pump I think is an AC Delco EP 386 and for later model engines with 60 psi you can use an EP 381. The bottom of these pumps have a couple plastic ears that interfere with the stock sending unit bracket at the bottom. You can either break off those ears, or modify the metal bracket to fit the pump.
