Title: prayer request
Post by: zieg85 on May 26, 2012, 08:14:57 PM
Well it saddens me to say I am a patient at the hospital while all the tests are evaluated.  Future is unknown for me for this hobby as I have suffered a stroke affecting my right side.  The positive is the motor skills are only affected thus far and strength seems to still be there.  I just have to connect my brain to the right side.  Hard to type currently but will have a lot of time on my hands to learn it all again while I go and learn to walk again without walking in circles.  God bless all!!!

Zieg, sorry to hear of that, but also glad that you took the time to let us know here on the forum. Everybody here is rooting for you and hoping for a speedy recovery. If I was closer I would bring that extended cab over to the hospital to park outside of the window for inspiration after I changed the oil, greased it, and washed it for you!

Any prayers of mine will have you included buddy.
In case I never mentioned it...I always enjoyed your input here and have learned from you, So thanks Zieg!

Zieg, sorry to hear about what your going through.
When you have a minute read up on Tedy Bruschi, a
New England Patriot that had a stroke and made a full recovery.
He continued to play for the pats after the stroke.

Update: I had my last test, a TEE which was looking for clots which they didn't see any.  Blood pressure is being regulated and occupational therapy stopped in to assess.  They are recommending in-patient therapy which the hospital I am in is well known for a great program.  I am very optimistic for a good recovery, only time will tell.  I have a great support system with family and friends.  It is difficult to type with one hand so my input will be shorter than usual, but KNOW I care deeply for this forum and read every single post which I learn way more than I contribute.  Thanks again for the well wishes, prayers and friendship.

Wish you the best of luck man!

I had a stroke when I was 24 that made left my whole left arm from the shoulder down without feeling and without control below the elbow.  They said this was permanent.  Did some therapy but they gave up on it after a few months.  well i kept on at home and, well it took a couple of years, but I slowly got control back first, then feeling anf once I was about 27 or so, I had full use back of my arm and most of the feeling.  today at 31 I have full use and full feeling back.  I had to give up anything fun like cars for 2 or 3 years.  was a depressing few years.  But I kept doing what I do and I got it back eventually.

I remember before I got my feeling back, always walking around with my hand bawled up in a fist.  I was so scared I'd break my pinky off and not feel it I kept them in fists all the time to protect it.  And kept that hand in my pocket as much as possible... in a fist.  maybe that helped some, who knows...  no telling with this stuff.

It won't be fun, and it probably won't be quick, but there's a great chance you'll get what you lost back later on.  The therapy is a serious pain in the butt, but it works; no doubt!  don't give up man!

Kenny

I know what you're going through brother.  I had forgotten most of my problems with this (cuz I wanted to)  I remember more and more now.  I'm not complaining, I just know how lucky I have been.  I think you can be that lucky too man!  I'm praying for you!  I can talk some if you want to PM.  if you don't, that's good too.  I know typing is a pain in the butt.  I just want to let you know, I've been there,  and it can get better, but it may take a butt load of effort.

I remembered too, I had the arm, but the left side of my face sagged and I drooled for 3 mos.  it was bad.  I wouldnt leave the house.  but my mother helped me work on it and we got past it.  my face cleared up, then eventually so did my arm.

So take it from me man, no meds, no actual therapy, other than me continuing what the docs had me doing before they gave up, and I got back to 98%  I say 98% only because my left arm tends to tire more easily than the right, but I'm not complaining.  and on top of that I wrecked my old truck flipped it 6 times, and the seatbelt messed up the same arm even more.  I'll never complain though, because that seatbelt is why I'm alive today.  I'm tickled to death I'm so well off!  You'll get there again brother!

So sorry about the stroke and you will be in my prayers!  You can do this!!  It no doubt will take a lot of hard physical therapy work for you, but the outcome from that will be great!  I have seen some family go through this and the best advice I have witnessed is to give it your all.  The best outcomes have come from those who really put a lot of work into physical therapy.  I am sure it is no doubt mentally draining, but I want to encourage you that it is worth it!

Prayers for you and your family my friend!

The human body is a mystery. No one knows why some things happen, but miracles can happen and you'll be good as new in no time. If you have as much dedication to healing as you do for this forum, you'll be on the fast track to turning wrenches again. Best of thoughts to you, and your family, my Chevy brother.

I'd like to start out today and say a HEARTFELT Thanks goes to my family and friends. The support is overwhelming. THIS IS KEY!  humor.   I almost broke my leg one time, actually fractured one of the bones, running behind my truck and caught the trailer ball with my shin.  well  even in that much pain, I grabbed my knee like peter griffin and actually did what he did making fun.  everybody laughed their butts off, till they found out they had to take me to the local ER to get a splint.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5reDsSIiAk (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5reDsSIiAk)

Truly, I did that cuz it was funny no matter how hurt i was.  They laugh about it now, they laughed when i did it, They didn't laugh at all at the ER, but I tried to make it as funny as possible.

Humor LITERALLY is your best weapon.  I have problems and insecurities, like anyone else, but if you point them out to me even in public, I don't wanna fight, I'll make more fun of myself than you EVER will.  I promise.  Plus it lightens the mood with everyone involved

Is a stroke serious?  yes.  should you take it seriously and let it rule you H E L L  NO.  laugh at it, and as soon as it becomes fun you have it beaten RIGHT THEN.  even if you never get back to 100%  if you can make fun of yourself a bit (A BIT, NOT TOO FAR)  it loses power.  If I was drooling in a wheelchair, I'd make people laugh.  that's just me.    I've been arrested before, and before the cop had me to the jail, I had him laughing a couple of time.  and you know how serious they can be.  I don't care.  I do whatever he tells me, but I'm on a mission to make serious people laugh and I usually get what I want on that count.

My family supported me like yours does, that makes probably 65 to 70% of the difference.  Tell your family you love them.  I tell mine ever time I see them (literally)  and laugh at yourself when those supporting you can't laugh and feel terrible.  before long, whatever HAPPENS  all will be laughing.  If you ever can get to that point with the supporters, THAT"S BETTER THAN FIFTY GOLD BRICKS!  Nowadays, no matter what I do or what happens, they laugh at me (It's good natured, NEVER bad) but I still laugh be3fore they do.  Its so much happier these days, that I'm glad what happened to me happened.  It was inconvenient for me, and scared me, but brought us SO MUCH CLOSER TOGETHER.   I'd do it all again if it would help like it has in my life.

KEEP GOING BROTHER, THOSE PEOPLE SUPPORT YOU FOR A REASON.  APPARENTLY NO MATTER WHAT HAPPENS TO YOU OR HOW USELESS YOU MAY FEEL, THESE PEOPLE KNOW (KNOW)  YOU ARE WORTH THE EFFORT.  THAT MEANS THE MOST.      YOU    ARE   WORTH   THE   EFFORT.    You'll get back to almost normal if not normal.  it may take a year or two or three, that don't matter, make it bro.  I have faith in you too.   I also DON'T BELIVE IN STOKES being as bad as they say and you'll recover at least 80% better than the docs say.   I PROMISE YOU.

GOOD LUCK BROTHER!

KENNY KIRKLAND

Awesome encouragement Kenny, THANK YOU, IT MEANS A LOT...  The coordination continues to come back.  There is a lot of humor in the gym area with the therapists bantering on with the patients.  Laughter does make the day enjoyable and go by a lot faster.  I was working with tools today as part of the OT, putting electrical BX connectors together.  The bad hand picked up the screw driver like I had done it before, just a little awkward.  There is talk of a 6/6 release to go home then out patient from there.  Blood pressure is finally regulated so hopefully I continue to move forward tomorrow.  Thank all of you for your words/prayers/well wishes.

Zieg...even with having a stroke you can probably use hand tools like nobody they have ever encountered before!! ;D

Keep up the good work with the physical therapy, we are all pulling for you. Sounds like you will have little to no problem overcoming this. And thanks for keeping us up to date on how you are doing, I know that I'm not the only one that keeps checking this thread to see if you have posted an updated. So far it has been all good news except the original post and I am glad to hear that you are positive and improving.

I just got the news of being released tomorrow.  I have a long way to go but feel I can better rehab myself puttering around the homestead along with out-patient rehab.  Went for a long walk outside in the courtyard today, different terrain, rocks, mulch, grass and curbs and I didn't go boom.  I feel confident to go home.  Now the hard work begins getting my right hand back to 100%.  Onward and upward....

Best way to think Zeig.  When I shattered my right arm the Dr told me that I would be lucky if I got any use of it back.  I cannot twist my right wrist much but I regained most everything else.  Its been 2 years and today is the first I found something that bothers me and that was just spraying weeds.  So keep positive you will overcome this.

It has been 2 weeks since coming home from the hospital and wanted to update on my condition.  Rehab is 3X a week, M-W-F at 9AM.  I am told I am progressing nicely however not typical.  My hand/arm is nearly 95% back, my estimate, but still have some trouble walking very far.  Driving where I need to go with no issues and can walk without a cane but it isn't pretty...

In 2005 I had a blood vessel rupture in my brain and had a hemorrhagic stroke. When I got to the Hospital the neurologist told my wife to start making my funeral arrangements. The brain is an amazinig thing in that you can "rewire" it. I like you, had to learn to walk and write and do everything over again. My right did not go numb but it shook uncontrolablly. I was dizzy and nauseated constantly.
The 1st day in rehab thay gave me a walker. After a while when the guy put the tennis balls on the legs so it would slide it felt like I had gotten a big promotion. Then I moved up to wearing a belt so they could catch me if I started to fall. (no walker) It was a big day when I got to use a cane. I used a cane for close to a year.
Long story short, I am fine now. It was pretty bleak for a while but I put my mind to it and got better. My balance isn't as good as it used to be but that's about it.
Back to rewiring your brain. You just keep trying to do the things you have dificulty with now and they will get easier to do because your brain figures out a different way to do it.
DO NOT give up on yourself and don't sell yourself short. Just keep plugging away at it everyday and things will work out.
I worked on my old truck and that helped my motor skills as well as remodeling a room. Long walks are good too.
Keep your head up and you will be back to where you where. Think positive and God bless.

I do feel fantastic and the stamina is really coming back strong.  I was on the tractor till 9:30 tonight and still going strong after a long day of non-stop outside work trying to get ready for my son's graduation open house in 2 weeks.  Therapy is getting more challenging working now on balance issues and working toward the standard job requirements.  Will have to take some pictures of how things are shaping up.

Does you PT have a Balance Master machine? That thing helped me more than anything else I did. Also, we have a big hay field next to our house. I would walk it daily. Once I had walked it a few times and made sure there were no hidden holes or anything, I know this sounds wierd, but I would try to walk it with my eyes closed. I had a stick to help with the balance.
Anything you can think of that is difficult to do (within reason) is what you should try to do.
My PT also placed a spread out deck of playing cards on the walls on each side of a hallway and would make me walk the hall and point out the cards as she called them out. You could not stop walking and it made you look at something other than where you were going.
As you make progress, at first you make big leaps. Then it gets to where you are making progress in smaller increments. Don't get down though, it's still progress.  Keep working and you are going to be fine.

Balance is what she (PT) is working on most with me.  Pretty much done with the hands stuff as most 99% seem to have returned.  I have 5 more PT sessions approved with my insurance and she is very clear on what I need to do in order to return to work with some restrictions.  At home I just had 23Ton of crushed run delivered and have to spread it out which is a lot of work with the FEL on the 58 Ford Tractor.  Good practical PT if I ever seen it...

Oh yeah I agree. Any thing you can do that requires you to be up and moving is great. Glad you are able to do these things. Blance was my biggest set back. It's a little problem but I can live with it. I had a slur for a long time but it eventually went away. Just doing what you want to/can  when you feel like it.

It's like I said. At first the improvements are huge gains. Then as time goes your victories get smaller. Keep exercising and be SURE to get at least 8 hours of sleep a night. When I went back to work, I was fortunate to be able to work half days and still get half of my short term disability through my company. That went on for several months before I could work full time. I was like you probably are. At the end of the day I would be wiped out.
Look, just don't get down and give up. Every day you get a little stronger. I lnow it doesn't seem like much but you are. You will overcome this thing.

That went on for several months before I could work full time. I was like you probably are. At the end of the day I would be wiped out.
Look, just don't get down and give up. Every day you get a little stronger. I lnow it doesn't seem like much but you are. You will overcome this thing.

Well things are looking up... While my last "oh poor me" downer post, yesterday was actually awesome.  30+ family members showed up for a "work day" /cookout to help get the garages emptied out and in the office trailer.  Mind you the task was overwhelming...and the weather was 104+ out there.  I was out before anyone came moving things, getting the office trailer ready to put stuff in, tractors (4) moved out of the way before anyone showed up from their parades and what not.  I felt strong and worked all day out in the heat with the rest of them directing what needed to go where.  I did better than I really thought I would but the true test was how I felt this morning after the fact.  I was out a total of 10 hours on my feet and lived to tell about it.  Today is working inside a bit as it is even hotter out today.

Both responses sound positive to me.  Its nice to see that your family came and helped you with one of your big projects.  Did you ever get that cute nurse to chaise around?  ;D

Early on I had a knock dead gorgeous one but I was still restricted to bed or the alarm would go off...  ;-D

They would let me out of bed to sit in the chair beside the bed sometimes at first. If she, or whomever was with me had to leave they would tell me to stay in my chair and not get up! I felt like a little kid.
Glad to hear you are getting better. The whole experience taught me to try to remember to appreciate today for what it is. I worry about today, today. If tomorrow comes, it will take care of itself.
Good luck and keep on keepin on.

Well I had my last approved physical therapy session today and graduated...  The therapist only cautioned to keep moving and active as most of the recovery is done in the first 3 months.  Based on my job description I can do most everything.  See the doctor next week and if cleared from him back to work on the 18th...

Well that is good news.  I couldn't wait to go back to work after both of my surgeries these last few years.  I know what I went through and what you went through are diffrent, but when the Dr said this day on light duty I was counting days.  I think I was mostly bored.  Anyways keep up the good work and ohh and what won the stones or the tractor?

The tractors won...  The Ford did most the work, I have a Wheel Horse 308-8 with a 42" blade help level and the Wheel Horse 520H with a 64" blade that I drug backwards.  After some traffic and 2 nice rain falls I have a few areas that are low so a little more work is needed.

Well I did manage to return to work on 7/18 as planned.  I feel good, stamina is fine.  My only issue now is walking.  I am still a little slow but that seems to be getting better each day.  Thanks everyone for the encouraging words, prayers and support.  I really count this forum as a blessing.  The medical bills keep rolling in and we should just make it without too much trouble.  No interest 2 year terms was acceptable with the hospital for the main bill.  We'll just have to step up the Zieg72 sales on the net to help offset the income deficit.  It is amazing how much a 13 stay in the hospital costs.

Hey Zieg I was wondering how you was doing?

Fantastic, thanks for asking.  Walking sometimes gives me some troubles depending on the day but the right hand/arm for the most part has returned 100%

Update:  Progress still happening.  The discomfort in my left hip and left ankle hardly bother me and has been my limiting factor.  I am walking with a slight limp but barely noticeable unless I have overdone it for the day.  I tried a slight run the other day, was a mistake...  I am feeling great health wise and my blood pressure is well under control.  I am finding it easier to get up off the creeper and down to kneel when I work on stuff.  My muscle tone on my right knee is returning as the movement almost mirrors my good leg.  No problems at all with my right arm, writing is as good as it was and using tools are natural again.  Most of all the desire is returning to get after all the projects that seem to go no where.  My sons wreck has motivated me, I have to get the 85C20 buttoned up and back to my body man so he can finish it up.  I need the garage space to work on his Cavalier.

It has been 6 months since my last update.  Subtle improvements every day are noticed.  Getting up and down, rolling around on the creeper is no problem now.  Every once in a while my right hand won't do something I want it to but for the most part it is fine.  I worked all day yesterday in the garage unbolting, cutting, torching, rolling around on the creeper under my 84 C30 getting ready to take the utility bed off and convert it to a regular pick up truck.  The true test was how I would feel the next day and I passed with a gold star...

That's what you go for man, little improvements everyday...  It's been years, but sometimes my arm still goes numb, just from sitting wrong (or right) on the armrest in the car/truck, but I move it, shake it off and go about my buisiness.  can be quite irritating sometimes, but nothing i can't handle.  sounds like you're improving quite well.  It'll only get better and better, so remember that...

Good luck brother,
Kenny

Ask the lord to not only guide you through these times, but to walk along side you always. In acceptance of the lords will, and faith in his ways you will find peace of mind. I wish you and your family the best. I don't know you, and you don't know me, but I will pray for you and yours. Have faith.
