78 chevy steering column
« on: May 28, 2002, 08:16:00 PM »
How do I get the steering column out of a 78 chevy truck? I have the clamps unbolted, but can't get past the shifting levers. I don't want to destroy anything, since I need all the parts for another 78. Are there any clips or bolts that I am not finding?

There are some (about 5 0r 6) small bolts that hold a plate and gromet to the firewall.  You will have to peel back the cardboard and insulation to remove them.  You will then need to disconnect the steering under the hood and disconnect the shifting linkage (assuming its an auto).  Lastly disconnect the wiring harnesses and remove the two bolts that hold the column to the dash.  Then just pull it out.

Hi. You will need to remove the bolts under the dash that connect to the brake pedal/booster support and also remove the bolts at the  firewall.  Additionally, you will have to separate the column from the steering shaft as well.  Good luck!
