'82 C10 Towing Capacity
« on: July 17, 2017, 04:22:22 PM »
A few weeks ago I picked up a 1982 Chevrolet C10, single cab long bed, with the 6.2L Diesel and the 700r4 transmission. I've looked around to try and figure out what the towing capacity is, with no success. Was wondering if anyone here had any info.
To be more specific, I'm planning on getting a frame mounted hitch for it, as right now it only has a bumper mounted ball. Both figures would be helpful but the one I'm mainly looking for is the frame mount.
Thanks in advance to anyone who has any info.

One important bit of information which was not provides is gear ratio.

Besides the nameplate rating, it is always important to consider elevation changes (hills?), speed (hp) needed, and presence (condition) of trailer brakes.  I routinely drag around 15k 5th wheels and up to 6k tandem bumper pulls with my wore out SWB K10 (305,700R4) with 3.42 K20 running gear.  But only local, no hills and at low speed.  5th wheels always tow nice, bumper pulls not so nice..

your gvwr should be between 5200 and 6100. do you have the th400 or 700r4? if you town with the 700 just keep it out of OD. your trailer is the most important thing, if you have brakes on it you could tow a car with no issues. if you do tow in the hills use your brain and keep the speed low

How do I go about finding out what gear ratio I have? I've looked around on the truck for a plate or something that would tell me the numbers but haven't found anything.

Alright, so I found a code stamped into the rear end reading "GM30", which I believe is 3.45 gears.
