Steering column question
« on: July 23, 2017, 01:59:47 AM »
I tried to post this in the steering column area but failed so forgive me moderators....

I have a 1980 custom deluxe non tilt steering column. What and where I need help is fixing the gear selector. It doesn't lock or catch when I go from park to drive reverse etc. Before I go taking it all apart, is there a quick fix for this or maybe a common problem? I can't find any posts related to this problem....

Any help or advice is appreciated.

Column shift?

Yes column shift. I basically count slight 'bumps' from park to find drive reverse etc...

check the rubber bushing or lack of. i have a diagram of it but its at home.
pop your hood and find where the gear selector rod joins the steering column. have someone shift it (with the engine off) and see where you have play at. you'll probably notice a what appears to be a big hole but in reality its missing the rubber bushing due to age
