Searching for model type.
« on: October 16, 2017, 03:13:32 PM »
Recent 1974 C10 owner here, truck came de-badged and no RPO codes in glove box (previous owner removed sticker). I would like to re-badge the truck with correct badge. How can I go about finding out what model I have?
It has controls for AC but no compressor, it has the wrong dash pad (GMC) but VIN starts with CC so I know it's Chevy and not GMC. Are there certain details I should look for to determine the model of my C10?

My search came back empty but then again I might not be searching in the correct place. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Thank you, I did find something similar and narrowed it down to "place of birth" (Freemont Ca) and engine size but no Model type (Custom C10, Cheyenne ...)

From one of your previous posts, you say this is a stepside truck?  How original does everything look for the truck?  Any photos?

Items that make up the various trim levels (i.e., Custom, Custom Deluxe, etc.) are in the link below:

Yes, it is indeed a short body stepside. It has what I believe to be original to the truck the AC dash controls, also in the engine bay it has some AC plumbing but no compressor. Power brakes, non tilt steering column no headliner but then again this truck was repainted so maybe the interior panels were removed and tossed.

There was a lot of shady/dangerous "repairs" done to this truck before I bought it. I'm about 4K deep in repairs so far but I'm determined to make this truck as safe and reliable as I can so that I can enjoy the heck out of it and not have to worry about feeling guilty in the event I sell it down the line.

Thank you for the link!

The 73-75 trucks had a slightly different HVAC setup than the 76-up trucks.

My 74

Notice there’s no max position label, only a/c.
Max is attained by sliding the temp lever all the way to cold.
There is a switch inside the controls that is activates the max mode.

Like Jason said only 73-75.

Also when in max the blower defaults to hi only if everything is as factory, hooked up and working.

Right off the bat I can tell the A/C controls are different, on mine the far left control has a High on top, a Fan Icon in the middle and a Low at the bottom. I'll snap a picture of the A/C control panel on my '74.

Still don't know what model type I own. ???

There can be telltale signs and ways of narrowing it down. You should start by sharing pictures and the vin # (you can omit the serial #)
,                           ___
                         /  _ _ _\_
              ⌠¯¯¯¯¯'   [☼===☼]

Hi Robzkombi:
Did you say your door jamb ID plate was missing? If not, what is all the numbers after the "CC"? if your ID plate is missing, does your title have the ID/serial number?

Henry

Henry,  the ID tag is there it's the RPO sticker in the glovebox that is missing. I did decode the VIN which started off with CC (chevy) but that's as far as I got with that.

I did take a picture of the A/C controls it's on my phone, I'll see if I can upload it from there to here in a few.

Hi Rob:
Here is the VIN decoding for 1974:
First Letter-Division
C:Chevrolet
T:GMC

Second Letter-Chassis
C:conventional cab, suburban
G:light duty forward control
K:four wheel drive
P:forward control

3rd Letter-engine:
Q: L-6, 250 ci, 1-barrel
T: L-6, 292 ci, 1-barrel
V: V-8, 350 ci, 2-barrel
Y: V-8, 350 ci, 4-barrel
Z: V-8, 454 ci, 4-barrel

First Number-Series
1:1/2 ton
2:3/4 ton
3:1 ton

2nd Number-body style
2: forward control chassis only
3: cab-chassis (cut-away)
4: cab and pickup box
5:Forward control chassis only (steel-aluminum body)
6: Suburban body
7: Forward control (rec. vehicle chassis)
8: utility (Blazer)

3rd number-model year
4: 1974 (for all series...if your number is different here, some of the other codes will be different)

4th character-assembly plant
A: Lakewood
B: Baltimore
C: Southgate
D: Doraville
F: Flint
G: Framingham
J: Janesville
K: Leeds
L: Van Nuys
N: Norwood
V-GM truck-Pontiac
R: Arlington
S: St. Louis
T: Tarrytown
U: Lordsville
W: Willow Run
Y: Wilmington
Z: Fremont
1: Oshawa
2: Ste. Therese

Last 6 numbers is "sequential number"
-I do not know what this indicates other than maybe a date code or serial number

As Blazer74 mentioned, it appears you have a air conditioning control panel for a 1976 or later truck. 1973-75 did not have the "Max" position.

In the engine bay, the color of the firewall may indicate the original color of the truck....as will the inside color of the firewall behind the dash.

Yeah, without that glove box service parts ID it will be hard to nail down the exact oem package the truck came with. Do you know what dealer originally sold the truck?

Regards,
Henry

Is the dash emblem missing as well? Pictures are really the only way any of us can suggest what trim level you may have had. Regardless you can always pick the one you like the best and dress it accordingly.

Hi Rob:
Yeah, photos of your grill, fenders (where emblems go), tailgate, hood front edge, inside doors, headliner, and seat may help figure out what trim level you had. If you were really into figuring it out, you could go to the GM Heritage Center and order the original build sheet...I think it costs about $50. See link:
http://www.gmmediaarchive.com/

But, like Vile says, you can configure your trim level to almost anything you want with the parts that are available now without having to do any difficult mods.

Regards,
Henry
