86 scottsdale.. will not go into gears
« on: November 03, 2017, 05:25:51 AM »
Hi guys.  Thanks in advance for the help.  I've searched the forums but haven't found anything helpful pertaining to my situation.   Lots of other great information though.

My dad bought this truck brand new in 86.  In 2001 it got a new crate goodwrench 350 put in it.  From 01 to 06 that motor got 16000 miles out on in.  Then it say got years.  Dad said if I could get it running I could have it.  So that I did.  :)  changed all the fluid. Washed out the fuel tank, new sending unit, new fuel pump, new carb, new radiator, etc..

Well the truck ran good got about 400 miles and not it will not go into gear with the engine running.  It will go through the years with the truck off.

If I have it on a slight incline with the truck in 1st gear and press the clutch in and out.. the truck stops and goes like the clutch is engaging?

This whole process has been something that has been on my mind for years and it is awesome to finally have this truck as a project to work on.  I know it probably won't be an easy fix but I love learning about all this.  So do any of you guys have any thoughts before I go tearing into this thing after work?

sounds like either the slave cylinder isn't releasing the clutch all the way.  The pressure plate could also be the problem.

Thanks for the response.  Yeah I figured I was going to have to get in there and tearing things apart.  Pressure plate was my first guess.

If the slave was not releasing the clutch all the way wouldn't there be other symptoms I would be recognizing such as maybe the clutch burning or..??

It is kind of hard to pop it back out of gear even with the truck off.  See what I'm saying?

So I finally had time to mess with it.  35 dollars and an hour later.. with a new slave cylinder she runs like new.
