Underneath your floor covering/mat there is a removable cover which will give you amble clearance to slide the tranny back. To replace the clutch fork, you will need to remove the bell housing.The cover looks similar to the one shown

I would stress that at no time was the transmission support bar removed.
I still don't understand your logic in not simply lowering the unit to do the work needed.
