Y-pipe headers, need some feedback.
« on: April 07, 2008, 05:11:20 PM »
Ok, I think I am going to break down and get headers and Y-pipe/ single outlet exhaust (since eventhorizon66 said they stick out :D )
This is the delima, I haven't ever had the desire to buy non-dual exhaust until now.  Reason being the truck will have a single remote mount turbo that we sell bolted in the back, so I need headers AND the y-pipe and it has to fit the truck, no smog stuff....  If it has an full exhaust with it that is fine since I will basically need that too until the turbo gets mounted.

So, what has anyone used or had experience with?  I have been looking at Edelbrock but I am COMPLETELY open to options.

Chris

If you want the "Y" pipe out of my 76 I will send it that has no emission's at all  ;D

I (me not being a expert) would think you will choke the engine.

Thanks for the offer, but I have a stock setup, I am looking for something aftermarket in the 2.25- 2.5" range.  It won't be choked off though as it will eventually have a remote turbo on it... :D

I would run the 88 style shorty headers and get a factory y pipe from an 88 up. Everything will basically bolt into place with minor tweaking.

I bought the same set of headers for my 86.  I could not find anything so I will have to have it made.

When I ordered my Doug Thorley's they offered me a set of headers exactly like you are describing.  I think these are the ones.  They are a tri-y but more of a mid-length design with the passenger side bent inward a bit.  They include a y-pipe.  Oh and if you choose to go this route call them direct to order.  They gave me a HUGE break on the price of my ceramic coated 300Y's, even saved over summit's price.

Or you could have a competent exhaust shop fabricate a Y-pipe for LT's like I did.  I wanted a single exhaust to concentrate more heat on the cat, but have the ability to easily switch to duals when I no longer have to do the smog test.

Man, those guys throw cash around like Ohio throws salt in Winter. $2000 here, $1500 there, pretty soon your talking some real money. How can a normal family guy keep up with that? If we took all thier advise, we'd be in the poor house asking Congress to bail us out.

Woha, where did that come from? Just tax season getting to me, I guess. Sorry, guys.

That's all those shows are is an infomercial for everybody's products.... they glorify it, make it looks like a snap to put in their "bolt on" stuff and it's a double home run for them. There's a lot of people out there with a lot of $ to spend....

I DVR'd Trucks! and skimmed through it.  I am guessing you asked me that because I said remote mount turbo and the show gave me the idea.  Not the case though, via my brothers online store www.gracemotorsports.biz , I am a dealer for STS.  We R&D'd their Regular Cab turbo system on my brothers 2000 truck.  We have been a dealer since 2004.  It has been planned all along to turbo the Jimmy (I planned to build a 292 I6 for it for the turbo) and the 73-87chevytrucks.com truck I am building will have 2 of them on it...

I like those Thorley Headers..  I may have to give them a call, they are 2.5"
