AC compressor pics needed please
« on: June 02, 2011, 10:58:28 PM »
OK, here is the deal.  My 1985 Extended cab is just about ready for its local unveiling.  I got to looking at the AC compressor and it isn't lined up the way it should be.  I am trying to determine if the brackets are on backwards, or spacers are missing or put in the wrong place or the compressor is the wrong one.  My engine is a 5.7 L but I would think any SB V-8 mid 1980's or so would be the same with the short/newer style AC compressor.  My other trucks are not factory AC and the 454 is different.  Any help would be greatly appreciated.  I am hoping for its first cruise in next Thursday evening the next town over.

OK maybe someone can look at mine and tell me if the brackets are on wrong or what is up.  The compressor sits about 1/2 of pulley to far back and the belt doesn't ride straight not to mention the belt is the wrong series.  Thanks in advance.  I have other pics if needed.

That front bracket to the left of the pulley, the bolt at the top of the picture. Maybe put that bracet in front of the one it bolts to instead of behind? I dont have that set up so im not sure.

Looks ok from what I can see.

Here's some pics from my 87.  They are very large so not to lose the detail, you can look at them here.

If I remember right, after I swapped out the 1987 305, for the 1973 400 I had to put some spacers behind the power steering pump to make it work right.  I think they were just flat washers, 3/16" or somewhere around there.

Can anyone give me 2 measurements on their AC equipped SBC with the rotary compressor.  I would like to know how far the center of the pulley is from the edge of the bracket and how thick is the spacers are in back, both brackets, PLEASE???  Thanks in advance!!!

Looking at your 5th picture your pulley/clutch is much further away that mine appears so I may have 2 issues going on here.

Did you get this sorted out.  I just spent the last few weekends charging my R10's AC (after finding the compressor puked....)

Thanks for replying, no I haven't gotten an answer yet.  I guess I am going to have to find this out myself by hopefully seeing a stock set up at a car show to find the answer.  I suspect either a wrong clutch was installed for my application or perhaps there is a spacer between the clutch and compressor that was missed.  The brackets all seem to be installed correctly and I can't see where it can be spaced out to line up the way it should.  I have never had one apart so I don't know if there is a spacer or not.
