I am putting together a truck to show off the products we sell and here is the progress of it so far. I have HOPES that it will be drivable by May for the Maggie Valley 73-87 GMC/Chevy Truck show...
These are from the weekend on the March 6th, 2006 where I played swap the cabs:

Weekend of March 13th, 2006:
Directions for the project changed and the cabs were reversed. Now my nice shiney black frame that was once home to a Hilborn injected (in progress) 454/ Doug Nash 5 speed is now bare and awaiting the motor mounts for the 6.0L. The motor mounts were ordered on the 11th.
Here is where I am starting now (old pic):
My '73 project has swapped frames and direction some. Since I want to stay with the '73 front end, the 81-87 tilt was donated to the 6.0L truck. The frame I had was also donated since the horns were cut to fit the '81-87 frontend, and I wouldn't have to mock the '90's blazer tank back in and rebuild the suspension. Chris Lucas

Tuesday evening: Gatherered all the parts and pertinant pieces necessary for mocking the motor/trans and the tilt front end on the truck and put them on a trailer and headed for my brothers shop. Dropped them off last night around 12 midnight.
Here are the pics of the arrival to his shop (camera phone, so..):
Of course after I got there we had to complile a list of stuff that I did forget that needs to be delivered for the next trip so we can actually get something done.
Anyone have a wiring schematic for a 2003 6.0L engine compartment? Chris Lucas

I gotta question for you.. I seen your tech article about the blazer tank and decided that was a cool idea, then I got a susburban parts truck,so I robbed the tank out of it while I had it,but one thing I'm not sure about, have you figured out how to connect it to a filler neck? I don't really want to try to relocate a filler door to behind the rear wheels..I'm thinking about going thru the bed floor with a custom piece using the cap from a fuel cell..got any better ideas??
thanks,
Tim
BTW,good to see some progress on your ride, lookin good!!
-
Tim,
The blazer tank idea was figured out for a stepside and this is a fleet. I plan to extend the filler neck out enough to put it either in the corner of the bed or.... Chris Lucas

Cool, About time you show us how it done Hey I'm not sure what your doing with this truck. I thing you said you were planing on doing it one way now you going in a diffrent direction?
Is the cab done or does it still need to be primed?
Is that a fiberglass tilt front end?
Mabe I need to reread the pic. I think I'm lost or have I just got C.R.S.

Lookin' good.Keep the pics coming. You guys use litres for engines down there too? I thought it was just a dumb Canadian issue like using all metric bolts now. So how many cubes does that translate to?

Yes, I was going to use the older frame/newer cab and now I am using the newer frame and newer cab.
The cab has only been painted on the bottom. It will still need to be painted on the inside and on the outside. It will have a tan interior and red exterior.
Yes, the frontend is a US Body Tilt frontend. Chris Lucas

Progress up to March 20th, 2006:
Got the ECE engine mounts in on Tuesday.
Friday 17th: Gathered up items to take to the shop. Picked up a Pinout sheet for the PCM (only to find out it was the wrong one on Sunday)
Saturday 18th: and took a load of missed items up to the shop and started putting the steering together. Put the front brake lines on. Cinched up the stainless caliper lines and found a single stud crossmember that will work with the trans mount and the turbo app.
Pulled the exhaust pipes off the manifolds, removed the compressor, removed the EGR, Torque converter, starter and put the ECE engine mounts on.
Wasn't sure if the manifolds would fit or not, so we lowered it in place to test it out...
As you can see, they don't work. Found out I needed 00-02 F-body manifolds. So we pulled the manifolds off and dropped it into the mounts and it fits rather nicely.
Once we had the engine dropped in, we had some help come by and we removed the cab from the frame and positioned the trans in for mockup so we have an idea on what we are going to do for fuel lines.
Then we pulled the bed back off so we could re-mount the Blazer tank back in the frame and get everything laid out for routing of the fuel lines and so we can notch the cross sill to clear the top of the blazer tank. We also are laying out the routing of the fuel fill.
Sunday 19th: Since nothing was open, I picked up a transmount and fuel filter. Got the transmount cleaned up and mounted it up to the trans and drilled the holes in their new location. Pulled the fuel lines off and removed 90% of the harness from the Engine. Once it was off we started pulling the harness apart to trace all the wires (several were cut and missing the ends) Once we got everything laid out I realized that they gave me the 2WD version instead of the 4x4 version.

Friday March 31st: I went and picked up the Tranny for a rebuilt and I took some measurements and notes on the fuel lines that I have to run and sent them to Pure Choice for some feedback.
Saturday April 1st: I started on the ECM harness and wrote out where all the wires go on the harness
Sunday April 2nd: I started back up on the real harness trying to find out where all the wires that were cut actuall go (it is real fun)
Monday April 2nd: dropped the tranny off to be rebuilt (hope to get it back on Friday)
Tuesday April 3rd: Got all the wiring figured out except 3, just need to trace them down. Then I need to find the missing connectors and I should be done.

Friday April 7th: Picked up the rebuilt 4L80E from the trans shop. Fuel lines and fittings arrived from Pure Choice Plumbing. Found that one of the fittings were the incorrect size
Saturday April 8th: Late start, Dropped the tranny off and started working on the wiring... AGAIN! The schematics I have apparently don't match the PCM, so I am now having to trace ALL of the wires. While Jamie and I are doing that, my brother is routing the fuel lines/fitting and bending up a EVAP line.
Sunday April 9th: put the tranny in to check clearance for the front fuel lines. Now I need the F-body manifolds to verify they will work, so I am stuck here. Still working on the PCM wiring, got all the harness wires figured out and I am now working on the rest of the lines that I have to find. The missing connectors are KILLING me.

It was a little slow due to Easter, but
Thursday April 13th: Went and picked up a set of F-body exhaust manifolds, picked up some Trans Fluid and found the actual CORRECT pinout for the wiring harness.
Saturday April 14th: Expected to bolt the manifolds on only to find out that they don't work. Started getting ill. Apparently I need to get some manifolds now. After a bit of a lull, we decided to check the drivetrain angle. It was OFF by about 3 degrees. So now I need to make a new trans crossmember. The Tranny tail needs to come up some. Since all of the parts are not yet on the truck, we decided to mock up the frontend and get the tilt ready for mounting.
We decided to mount the cab back on and check for fuel line mounting clearance, transmission clearance and firewall clearance.
While we had it on we decided to get the bumper mounted and then get ready to chop the rad support for the tilt frontend. We mounted the '81-87 bumper bracked on the '80 frame and then mounted the bumper.

Chris, 4wheels&off-road magazine did a 6.0 liter swap in an mid 80s 4wd blazer a little over a year ago. If I remember correctly they wrote in the article that the 97-98 F-body (camaro/trans-am) manifolds had the best clearance for the blazers frame. Might want to give them a try. I had a 5.3 I was going to put in my blazer and it had the truck manifolds and there was no way they were going to fit in between the frame rails. Ended up selling the 5.3 and bought a complete running 89 suburban. Way less modification.
Anyway if you know anyone that subscribes to that mag you might want to see if they have their old issues. It was a 2 part story and had a lot of good info on these new style engines.
Sorry I didn't see where you had said you already got the F-body manifolds. In that article they gave specific years to get and it was either 97-98 or 98-99. There are like 4 or 5 different designs GM makes Edited by: toplessblazer at: 4/21/06 11:19 pm

Thanks for the info Topless. The article is here if anyone wants to see it: www.4wheeloffroad.com/bra..._0406_eng/

Since it was Mothers Day weekend, I only had Saturday to work on it and I got a late start so the accomplishments were minimal.
Monday, May 1st: Recieved the engine plates from S&P.
Saturday, May 14th: Drove up to pull the ECE mounts off and replace them with the S&P mounts only to find out when I got there that I had left the motor shells at home STILL bolted to the 454.. It went downhill from there...
Sunday, May 15th: Unbolted the motor shells from the 454 and sent the 2 sets of manifolds BACK to the shop. The new mounts should solve the clearance problem with the frame.

Just posting a teaser pic from this weekends progress, I will add another post later when I get more stuff uploaded.
We got the new mounts on, chopped the rad support (more than once) pulled the tilt out of the crate, and mocked it up, then Sunday we got serious, and chopped the rear cross sill for the bed to gastank clearance and put the doors, bed and tilt on. Now comes the fun of actually aligning all this stuff...
For now.....
Saturday May 20th: lifted the motor up and pulled the ECE mounts off and replaced them with the new S&P plates. Installed the "normal" SBC mounts and dropped it back in place. As you can tell, the motor sits back quite nicely now. Once the plates were on I took the original Truck manifolds and test fitted them. The driverside fit fine. The passenger side still hit some (of which I had expected) and I chose to see what I can do along the lines of grinding down the area I don't want to use since I liked how they exited the truck. After some grinding I got it so it doesn't hit. Now I just need to plug the hole off.
Once that was out of the way we decided to pull the Tilt frontend out of it home of about 8 years. We pulled it out and set it on the truck for a general idea of what we were up against.

Sunday May 21st: After successfully removing the Tilt from the crate we decided to start on the core support next. Since the leading edge of the core support is built into the tilt A LOT of metal had to be removed and we still are not done. I plan to update my How-to section on captkaoscustoms.com with the process, but here is what we started with and here is where we are now.
Once we got this far we realized that there were going to have to be some modifications on the mounting of the core support and we needed to get all the body panels back on. We trimmed the bed for the Blazer tank Mod and then set it down on the frame. The we mounted up the doors and tried to get them aligned as best as we could. (yes these are GM doors from another truck and they need some serious work to be perfect) Once we got the body line fairly close we began the inspection process and dropped the frontend on and tried to align it. This is were we are currently

Looking great Chris. Just curious, what is the color of the bed or do you know? My 76 Scottsdale was the same color and I never could find out what it was. Thinking of painting my 78 that color, or silver and black.

I really like how you are documenting your rebuild. I am doing a complete tear down and rebuild of my originally owned 1975 Chevy K10 Stepside. I have been taking many pictures for myself and will try to share someday. I wanted to comment on your fiberglass front end. I have the same one from US Body. I have yet to install it and I hope that we can exchange information about getting it done. For starters, you can trash US Body's instructions at a certain point. One in particular are the steel brackets that tilt the front end. I haven't figured them out quite yet but they do not install as simple as the instructions show. You may have to refab the gussets on two of them and you may have to move your radiator supports back. Also, the brackets will be exposed in front of the grill. I will let you know more as I experience it. Thanks for all the information you are supplying.
-
The gussets on the tilt work fine with mine, just as their instructions indicate. What is the problem with them. I am moving the core support back as the tilt has it molded into it.
I planned to work on the truck during the last few weeks, but I ended up having to fix my house.... Chris Lucas

What color will yours be? I'm hoping to go black or black and silver. No offense if you like that blue........don't mean to offend.

Chris - how many projects do you have going on right now? :D

TOO many....
I am working on 2 currently, but I have 4 projects. I have plenty of projects for each of them...
1) 78 Jimmy - converting to TPI
2) 91 Crew Cab - finishing the interior, when time allows...
3) 90 Suburban - Just finished rebuilding the TBI and got it running. Will be starting on Interior
4) 86 Fleetside (73-87chevytrucks.com)- waiting for me to make a trip to Toolmasters house 80 miles away.
-
Sounds like my life :P
-
cant wait to see the progress.... 8)
-
Quick question: Was that a 25 or a 31 gallon tank you swapped to? Is the internal baffeling, the only thing that differentiates the TBI and non-TBI blazer tanks? Considering this swap myself.
-
31g on this one, it is an EFI tank with baffling.
-
OK thanks. So I guess the 25g version has the same length and width, it's just a bit shallower. Perfect.
-
Yes, it is about 2" shallower.
-
Monday April 14th 2008: Ordered a set of Thorley Headers.
-
Why did you chose Thorley's? I got a set of them once and they had to be ground down to install the spark plugs and all of the welds were exposed. I swore I'd never buy them again but this was 6 or so years ago.
-
Well, I was impressed with what I saw. Plus others that I trust had their hands on them and were impressed also and they are full length headers. They are LS conversion headers.. Below are the pics they sent me. Notice the frame shot...
-
Those look nice! Nothing like those pieces of crap I got.
-
I think 6 years ago is during the time the owner was divorcing and she got the business or something like that.
I will post pics with them installed when I get them.
-
Friday April 25th 2008: I got these in Thursday and put them in the truck on Friday. The passenger side fits great, but the drives side doesn't fit at all. I am sending them pics to them to see what they can do...
BTW, I am dealer for these now, so if you are looking for a set, let me know...
Vile, found out the history, Doug Thorley Headers is now owned by Summit Industries (not Summit Racing) who also owns Jardine.
-
Those look nice Chris - good luck on the drivers side
-
Friday May 30th, 2008: Previously talked to Doug Thorley Headers and they gave me the go ahead on modifying the headers to fit. Went up to start hacking on them and removed to tube that was in the way. Hopefully I can change them both to fit with a 1" back mounting plate.

-
Friday, June 6th, 2008: went to Tims shop to test the Thorley headers and see if we could mod them to make then work. It was a no go. So we are waiting to see if they can get a set built.
-
It seems that if the rear y-junction was rotated around clockwise some you could just run the #3 tube outboard (closer to the frame) of the #7 tube rather than over it. But that would involve extensive reworking to get everything lined back up. Were these headers specifically designed as conversion headers for 73-87's?
-
That is what I was going to do, but it won't work. In those pics I just dropped those in there. The problem arrises when you install the transmission linkage. With them sitting in there as high as they are, the linkage cannot be installed. They were hoping that the headers that these were originally designed for (67-72's) would fit the 73-87's. When they didn't I told them I would see if I could mod them to fit 67-87's with what you saw, but it doesn't work. A whole new header needs to be built.
-
Oh, I see. Well, when Thorley finally gets it all straigtened out, the 73-87 LS conversion crowd is gonna owe you a debt of gratitude for getting the ball rolling on these headers. They'll be the only one of their kind.
-
Actually S&P makes headers for them, but they aren't long tubes. I don't know if they can fit long tubes in there though and still not hand to low.
-
Man that sucks. That guy NITROUS is working on a set for the OBS(88-98) trucks, I wonder if they will fit our trucks. I think I had headers from an OBS on my truck when I first bought it(with the 350), and the trans crossmember was channeled. Maybe the frame is similar?
-
NICE build,,, you still have the wheels in the first pics ???????????????
-
Thanks, and yes I still have those rims if you are talking about the "general Lee" ones on the primer truck.

Not sure if it's been mentioned already or not, but S&P up in Arkansas does a good bit of LS into square body conversions and I believe they sell custom headers.
-
If you look at the top I mention that S&P sells headers (shorties) and I got my motor mounts from them.
The shorty headers from S&P are around $550, the BRB midlengths are $100 less.

Gotcha! Sorry I missed that post.

nice truck. i would like to ask if you still have those wheels that you started with on the truck and if so would you care to part with them?
-
They are the rollers for another truck. When I start on it I do plan to sell them.
-
Any progress on the truck?
-
Should be adding some soon.
-
End up year update?? ??? ;D

Good Gawd are you done with this yet? ;D
-
Hey Captkaos, you update all you other trucks, what about this one?
-
Nothing on this one in a while, hoping to finish up some and get this one going again, just not sure on the when.

Sunday, Jan 1st, 2012: Might as well post something to this one too. Since I had everything mocked up and basically ready to go in this truck as far as the engine/trans etc, It gave up its LS specific parts to go to my 1987 R10 daily driver (http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php/topic,12120.0.html) It has been sitting since before Lizzy was born and now sits in Toolmaster's garage stripped down. Still have another LS/4L80E for it, OR possibly a EFI solution for the 454/Hilborn...

anything new on your truck capt?
-
Yeah, it is in the other thread though. This one got stripped of parts as my driver went down and I just transfered everything over to it. This one has a 6.0L and a Doug Nash 5 speed waiting for it.
