77 Horn button chalky
« on: April 04, 2015, 03:29:44 PM »
I cleaned the stickiness off the steering wheel with some 3M adhesive remover. It cleaned up pretty well but the horn button looks kind of chalky. I guess its made of a different material than the rest of the steering wheel.

From the photos I've seen this is a common problem.

Short of painting the wheel and the horn button, is there a product that will clean the chalkiness away?

Will Armor-All or a Meguiar's product work?

you could try some kind of amour all or something along those lines. but dont get your hopes up. its probably just the plastic deteriorating from years of being in the sun and heat.

You could try some "back to black." It's made for black exterior moulding.

My 77 GMC's horn looked like that.  Nothing I put on it made much of a difference.  So I busted out the Novus 2 plastic polish (available at Amazon, impossible to find locally) and a microfiber cloth.  Polished the heck out of it after taking the center badge out.  It looked alot better when I was done but not perfect.  I followed the polishing with a couple applications of 303 Aerospace Protectant (also available at Amazon).  I almost perfectly matched the wheel after that.
