which carb?

i may have to replace my carb in my 85 k10 with a 350 and a quadra-jet on there now.  this is my daily driver/work vehicle.  i want to replace the carb with the cheapest "new" one i can get. i'm also preferring to get the most fuel effiecent one i can.  any suggestions?

+1 on keeping the qjet, they really are the perfect carb, you just have to understand them and do a little leg work to make them rock.  But when they do, they have the response of a small carb with the massive secondaries of a larger carb.

Q-jets are nice when they work properly but i can't stand to work on them, they are way to complicated for me to understand and way too many versions and changes through the years.  You don't need a q-jet for decent mpgs.  I currently run a holley 670a and love it so easy to tune and modify to make it work the way I want. I have very quick throttle response and get great mpg. It's not the cheapest carb but for simplicity sake it's my recomendation, they are designed to be user friendly and perform great without having to be a carb expert.
I'm not saying the q-jet isn't a good carb it just happens to be my second choice.

I'm less than satisfied with my Edelbrock. I would stick with the QJet if I had it to do over again.

I am getting almost 400 horse out of a qjet equipped motor.
It's almost trouble free.  I store my truck for 7 months of the
year.  I have had real bad luck with Holleys and Demons because
the bowl gaskets drie out during the winter and i have to rebuild
them each spring to stop the fuel leaks.  Never an issue with the qjet.

I like Quadrajet. Easy to rebuild. I have had them all. Quadrajet has a WAY better choke than anybody else. I agree with the Demon response (the old Demon's- Haven't tried the new Demon's).

Switched my q-jet out for an edelbrock 1406, am very happy with the way the edelbrock runs, but cost to do everything properly ran upwards of 500 dollars

I agree, I swapped my q-jet for an Edelbrock 1406 but I just changed the jets + rods and it needed a bit of setup on the electric choke/AFR screws. Total cost was $360, i'm impressed with it.

Q-jet is the best.  I don't know about holley, but I've noticed edelbrocks quality control is slipping.  I bought a new 1406 3 or 4 months ago, to replace the one i dropped and broke, and I noticed the throttle shafts fit BADLY in the bores.  they were way too loose IMO.  I had to use it, couldn't send it back because I needed the truck right then, but when I get a chance or it irritates me bad enough, I'm going to get one of those JET brand Quadrajet carbs.

I don't know how holleys Quality is right now, hopefully its better than edelbrocks is.  I love edelbrocks, have always had them, but the 10 or so I checked in the local stores all had loose throttle shafts.  this is unacceptable, and I can't get a constant idle, and if i spray carb cleaner on the outer ends of the shaft, the idle dips.  and this is brand new, not remanned carbs.
