Title: what size carb
Post by: 86gmc23 on July 29, 2014, 11:27:23 PM
I have a stock GM Mexican Crate Motor, didn't come with a carb so I threw in an old worn holley 750 double pumper during build.  It runs terrible so now I'm moving on to replacing carb. Can anyone suggest a good carb to put on it. Just a daily driver that has some get up and go, may do cam upgrade in future, just trying to get it running good for now.

Best is a working Quadrajet.  Buy one tuned up for a 350, because there's little passages and air bleeds that are sized for the setup.

An Edelbrock 1406 or Holley (I don't know the best model number, someone will chime in) will also work fine.

Whatever carb you get, you need to learn it and tune it, not just throw it on there.  Any carb that is well-tuned will work better than any carb that is not.

I put a Holley 670 street avenger on mine and I love it. It's just a 355 with an rv cam and headers and a victor jr intake and it's got plenty of power. It had a 750 edelbrock on it when I bought the motor but I think it runs much better with a 670

I got a Jet Performance Quad from Jegs and im very happy with it.

it is literally night and day between my 79 with an old leaky quad and my 77 with a like new quad.

plus you can get them in different configurations for stock/modded, engines big/small block, and car/truck

I swapped out my engine last year with one of the Mexico GM Crate Engines (ordered from JEG's).  I opted for an Edelbrock 1406 carb and 2701 intake on mine - just because I could buy it locally at O'Reilly Auto. Now that I have the timing set properly (thanks to the folks on this forum), I'm very happy with it.
