Headlight selector switch? Changing high beam to Low beam
« on: March 26, 2015, 01:58:11 PM »
When i pull the turn signal lever back towards driver it does not change the headlights from high beam to low beam.  It used to do this.  Now the headlights are stuck on high beam.

I researched the technical pages finding an article for ,Fixing Sloppy Tilt Steering, which contained instructions deep within addressing the turn signal lever which also selects the headlight beam.

Is that the correct process to gain access.  Or, Is there a simplier fix?

Thanks!

If the rod is connected to the switch there is no need to take the column apart.  Adjust or replace H-beam switch

Agreed...when I fixed my tile I put the whole thing together and as I sat in the seat to push the horn back on the wheel I realized I was sitting on the high beam rod..won't forget that again.

For now you can just follow the rod and push the switch manually

Thanks!  I saw the switch and rod.  And, visually watched the rod move it down towards the floor.  I will take it out and inspect.  Thanks again for the picture, that was great.

I can see the metal rod moving the headlight switch.  I tried to move the switch further.  The metal rod appears to limit the travel of the switch?  How does the switch come out?

I had this happen on my 87.  turned out the contacts inside the switch had arc-ed and welded themselves together in the high beam position.  wouldn't change no matter how hard i pulled the lever.  IIRC the switch is on top of the column.  the white box the rod coming out of the lower column connects too.  not too hard to get our but ya may have to lay on your head.

If you can manage.  take the switch apart, file all the contacts back smooth, put in some die-electric grease on said terminals, and put it back together.

If that is the problem, takes an hour or so total.

Thanks for the assistance!

I was at the pick-n-pull yard yesterday obtaining a spare tire holder and found a 85 C10 with the dash off with everything easily accessable.  Found the headlight dimmer switch, removed the lower backet on the steering column to gain access, unscrewed the two small screws on top of the switch and viola!  The switch came out.  Once in hand i was able to see and feel the "click" is in the switch, not the turn signal lever.  Hence my other question that is now answered, why is there no "click" when i pull the turn signal lever?

Thanks again!
