Washer Fluid Reservoir - 1980 K20
« on: January 29, 2015, 02:24:21 PM »
It seems there are no wreckers within a few hundred kilometers of where I live, and I'm looking for the stock washer fluid reservoir that came with this truck. I can't seem to find any new ones online, though I see a "universal" one pop up here and there.

Does anyone have any ideas where I can source one?

As this truck didn't come with a reservoir, I don't actually know what they look like, but from what I can tell about the abused wiper motor on this truck, it looks like the reservoir doesn't actually need a pump attached to it.

Can someone confirm this, and if possible, post pictures of what the washer set up looks like?

I believe the 1980 setup was the same as the late '70s setups.  The early 70's trucks had a metal bracket that the plastic reservoir slide into.

The later trucks had a reservoir with molded in ears that held the retainer screws. The pump should be on the wiper motor itself near the brake vacuum booster.

The pump would have three barbed nipples. The smaller two nipples would have rubber hoses running to the spray nozzles attached to the underside of the hood and routed through the cowl air vent slots at the rear of the hood.  The larger barbed nipple would have a rubber hose that ran to the washer reservoir.  There also would be a screen at the end of the hose inside the reservoir.

Attached is a pic that shows the later setup (which should be similar or the same as yours).

The late 70's reservoirs show up on ebay.

Thank you very much. I'll keep my eye out on E-bay for one.

What is the canister that is adjacent to your reservoir. I don't have one of those on my truck.

That is an emissions vapor canister.

The photo above is not of either of my trucks, but I thought it was a good image to show the setup.

Good luck with your hunt!

Srozell,  if you found a coolant over flow bottle, you can use that also as a windshield washer bottle. The coolant bottles don't say coolant on them, the caps are labeled and I believe the caps for both bottles are the same size so you could just put a washer bottle cap on a coolant bottle and then you would have a larger reservoir for washer fluid. The stock bottles are a little small compared to more modern vehicles.

Places like   Truck sell the correct washer fluid bottles too, so you can source one there if you want.

The link didn't come through 76.

Thanks for the tip LTZ, I'll keep an eye out for those as well.
