Which Rebuild Kit
« on: January 20, 2011, 06:32:05 AM »
So I did a common swapp and took out the original 305 in place of a 350 in my truck. My recently acquired 56 bel air has a strait six that needs a tune up. I decided I want to swap it for the 305. I figure if I have to rebuild might as well go with the V8 and what I have on hand. I really need some advice on a rebuild kit. I just added a intake and carb on the 350 and a friend installed the cam, lifters, and heads. I'm gonna take this one on myself! Well with help here if I get stuck of course.

This is what I plan to add besides the kit: Cam, springs, intake, headers, maybe converter if I need it. Don't plan on it being a screamer but just a fun little build and wake up that old chevy for once. If I miss anything additional please chime in and lemme know what else I need. Thanks in advance as always!

Here are the kits all within my budget:

I would try to look at summit or http://www.northernautoparts.com/.  They have some good priced rebuild kits and if there is any problem they should be able to help you better than ebay.

Really wouldn't waste time or money on a 305 when 350's are a dime a dozen.

Have you considered keeping the six? Clifford performance has some cool stuff for sixes...
77 c-10 - 77 400 86 700r4 "Emmy"
83 citation - 2.5L Four on the Floor!
88 sierra - reman 350 700r4 "Eleanor"
All normal practicality and rational money handling goes out of the window when it comes to my truck.

Well I'm only going with the 305 because It's what I have now and I'm deep into alot of projects. Really dont have room to keep a spare engine so I figured why not. I've put alot into getting an LQ9 project going and need something to keep me busy. I gotta be doing something while saving funds or else I get a lazy spell and they sit. I know the 350 wins the debate! It does make more since but I'm being lazy and tired of the everyday craigslist surf for the cheapest deal!

I dont really wanna keep the strait 6 but did think of keeping it all original. You dont see too many bel airs out there that are honestly all original. All it needs is a good tune up and some tires. Either way I'm gonna rebuild the 305 out of the truck. My nephews got a 91 camaro with some efi issues and hes gettin into the building stuff. More than likely going to him If he helps me out.

So any of those kits I posted look good or anybody reccomend one for a 305?
Purchased this for the Trans. Ditched the powerglide idea. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/BMM-30229/

UPDATE: How do I find out the year of my block? I'm thinking about this kit: http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=390283086164

I know the P.O. replaced the stock 305 for the one I have now. Its a 4 bolt main if that helps?
