1976 Chevy K-20...EGR?
« on: April 12, 2008, 11:48:24 AM »
Can anyone tell me or tell me where to find out if my 1976 K-20 (8400 gvw) with a 400 and federal heavy duty emissions orginally came with an EGR valve. I live in the "great" state of California and the smog nazis are killing me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

That information is particular to the build of your truck and should be published on the VECI label under the hood.

I don't know what the calif emissions would call for but at that time ( the 70's)  everything federal with a GVW of 6,001lbs or more was exempt.  My 78 c20 doesnt have any smog stuff except for the pcv valve and the valve in the exhaust to make it warm up faster.

Check Your Area to be sure, as I want to say 1974/75 and Later C/K 3/4's are required to have atleast a Vapor Canistor, and EGR in Cali....

The truck has Federal emissions, there is no Vapor Canister either.  I just live in California.

Also for anybody else interested, for the 1979 model year (federal anyway) the exemption GWV changed from 6001lbs and up to 8500lbs and up.

I live in CA. I have a '77 K-10. This truck was not required to have the cat converter or EGR due to the weight of the vehicle. It is required to have the air injection. I have the original air cleaner cover with the California smog sticker which shows that the only smog equipment is the AIR injectors. If I recall it was '78 or '79 that the cat and EGR were required on all vehicles. I can take a photo of the smog sticker and email it if you need it.

If you have a federal emissions vehicle and move to california, do you have to get it up to cali specs or just maintain the federal emissions that came on it originally?

You can just maintain the Federal specs.  I bought this truck for $400 and threw a motor in it and am trying to figure out what I need before going to the smog nazi station so I don't get flagged and have to see the referee.
