Title: painting rally rims
Post by: klaussk on April 24, 2011, 07:10:06 PM
I have the stock 15 inch rally wheels on my 85 stepside. I have the beauty rings on it. There not in the best shape but i used some mothers mag wheel polish on them and they shined up nicely. The actual wheel isn't so pretty. I have been thinking about painting the black. But not sure how it will look. has anyone tried this. If so let me see some pics.

It's a personal preference thing, but I don't like the factory rallyes painted black. I paint mine with a Duplicolor spray paint, the color is Steel Wheels. It's very close to the factory gray/silver and holds up good. I paint the backs semi-gloss black like they did from the factory.

I personally love the look of a semi-gloss black ralley, especially if the beauty rings are nice and shiny. Go with what you feel though man

I did a set of black rallys in a tan truck once and thought it looked sharp. I guess it depends on if you want the original look or want to customize a bit. The one I'm doing now is a darker brown and wondering what gold would look like? Mine aren't true rallys. I have dog dish hubcaps and added beauty rings and I kinda like that look too. Thats the beauty of paint... they make more everyday if ya dint like the way it looks!

I've got the rallys painted black on my truck and I like the look. I can't really post any pictures now since I'm on ly phone but if you search around I've got some good ones of my truck with them on here somewhere.

your signature pic looks good screamin. Someone with a bit more computer saavy than me could post a pic of a truck that we could change the colors of the truck and wheels to get a preview perhaps?

I've done my rallys black twice now, and I think it looks super sharp when the caps and rings are all polished up. I just use black wheel paint.

im about to do my rims black, and if you really want the paint to last, go to home depot and get
appliance expoxy paint or something of the sort, i cant quite remember what its called, as i may have drank a bit much. lol.
but i know it lasts a long time and its durable.

I used a can of spray paint I bought at Advance over in Deep Creek called Rustoleum "Hammered", which looks very close to original color, but it has a nice very subtle texture and color variation that really makes them catch your eye when you look closely.

BUT, the durability is not there.  I figure by this time next year I'll strip them and go buy some lacquer and do them with the proper product for the job next time.

I can't find my pictures now so obviously this post is worthless.  Sorry.
