Title: What did I break?
Post by: Phoenix on January 12, 2012, 07:23:12 PM
My truck has been down for a few months due to a broken transmission.  I really don't want to have it fixed unless it's something that would not be much.  I can pull it and re-install it, but I"m not comfortable pulling it apart.

My truck is an 83 with a 350 and a 700r4.  The transmission has been gone through before and I had a shift kit and a small stall added.

Basically I was taking off from a light normally and when it shifted to second the rear end locked up.  I slammed it in neutral and pulled onto a side street.  It still worked if I shifted it in first and left it there, or if I took first all the way to 6000 rpm and quickly shifted into third so that it would skip second.  I did not try OD as I think (I'm probably wrong) it shares some components with second and did not want to lock it up again.

Any guesses to what I broke?

Sounds like you could have a valve body issue.

Drop your valve body to see if all of the spring loaded valves are functioning properly, and not sticking.

If you have access to another valve body you could try that.

That would be my first guess to, it is easy enough to check the valve body too.

I had someone local tell me it could be the planetary gears.  If that is the case I might as well start my LS1 swap and upgrade to a 4L60E.

Had similar problem in my 1988 Chevy 1/2 ton 5.7L auto OD.

I was taking off when it jumped straight into third. When I stopped and restarted, it would not shift into second. Ran it up to about 4K in drive, let off the gas and then it shifted into third. No second or overdrive.

Made the 300 mile drive home in third, worried all the way when it was going to stop! Took it to the shop and they found the second gear had broken.

had an 89 with a 700r4 in it that had the same issue also. the shift band that runs 2nd and overdrive broke. but i still drove it around about a month like that till i had time to replace it with a 200 low miles junkyard tranny.
