Post by: GUILLERMOARIAST on November 09, 2008, 05:58:46 PM
Hi, i have 1980 chevrolet blazer k5 with the 250 cid engine carburated.
I would like to install an electronic Ignition system, because i want more Hp and mileage.

Have you done something like this?
What parts do i need?
Would you please tell me your opinion?

thanks

then you already have electronic ignition

Do you still have that 84 octane leaded fuel?
Is the 97 octane unleaded still available?

what fuel are you running in your K5?
What altitude are you operating at?

All the 250 I6 motors after 1975 will already have Electronic Ignition.

you can tell because with HEI, the coil will be in the dist. cap itself.   Someone could've converted over from HEI to points quite simply by putting an external coil on.  Dont know why someone would do that.

Thanks for answering people, i think i have a special kind of distributor because i do not see a coil, it might be inside the distributor.

I would like to show you some pictures of my distributor so that you can tell me what kind is it of.

Blue 82:

<<Do you still have that 84 octane leaded fuel?>> Yes, we still have that gasoline here.

<<Is the 97 octane unleaded still available?>> Yes, we have 84, 90, 95 97 and 98 octanes gasoline

<<what fuel are you running in your K5?>> Currently I am using 90 octanes gasoline unleaded, it is working fine, because with 84 octanes leaded the engine tended to tremble.

<<What altitude are you operating at?>> Well, i am using the truck only for small trips with friends, some weekends. I drive it with light foot, i don't like to floor the accelerator pedal because here in Peru gasoline is expensive US$ 4.33 per gallon.

I would like to find some trick that help me to save some fuel, because my truck has a low mileage, 12.5 miles per gallon.

Thanks

Guill, your pictures show you already have an High Energy Ignition Distributor, were the coil is mounted under a cover at the top of the distributor cap...  If you had a non- HEI/non-electronic distributor, you would have an externally mounted ignition coil....

From the looks of it, I would say you need a good tune-up(So long as your Distributor is in decent shape) with Performance wires, cap, rotor, coil, control module, coil, and a good set of spark plug....

The reason why i asked if leaded fuel is still available is because it is very easy to clog the catalytic converter using leaded fuel.

Leaded fuel kills catalytic converters, a clogged one can be responsible for you poor fuel milage
Do you still have the catalytic conver on the truck?
If the original 1980 unit is still on the truck it should be removed or replaced

Another thing to look at on trucks that age are the vacuum advance cannister
Located on the side of the distributor
As they get older the rubber diaphram inside get stiff causing sluggish performance/poor economy
or develops a hole causing a vacuum leak and poor economy

Something is seriously wrong if you're only getting 12.5 mpg.

There really are no "tricks" to getting good mileage------except for high compression and water injection.
And losing about 2000 pounds.

One "trick" you could try right now is to switch to an electric fan----remove the crank-driven fan.

I would do a tune up and replace all the ignition components and possibly rebuild the carb if it is original.
