hi im kinda new to this site and building a cool truck im wanting to either build or buy (rather build save money) a sub box couple problems i have are
1 im not sure what size would sound good i was thinkin 8 or 10 inch subs would be good with new speakers in the dash and some how speakers under my vents near the floor on the pass side and by the parking brake on the driver side not sure the proper name for them besides vents :-\ any help, ideas, pics or all of the above would be great thanks

I've been out of the stereo stuff for quite some time but I bought a set of 8" subs once and couldn't slide my seat back all the way. I took them out to build my own box and the speakers themselves with no box wouldn't let the seat slide back all the way. So, I don't have them anymore. I have always meant to get a set of flat subs that are electronic. I have heard they are very compact for what they do. I had a set of 6x9 cerwin vega's that sounded so good in a cavalier I had I couldn't believe it. I put sound mat around the cab corners and built custom boxes for them with a vent tube and all, they sound pretty bad in there. I have a set of high end boston acustics in my 80, also sounds bad. I have almost given up on making one of these truck sound good with a stereo so it will be interesting if anyone has some good advise.
-
wow thanks for the advice and maybe ill tyr that just use some 6x9s do you have a pic of your box you built for them?
-
No I don't have a pic of the ones I built and that truck is at the fairgrounds in storage so I can't get you one. I bought a kit somewhere a long time ago to put 6x9's in my 80. I like the one I built better, I used plexy glass and turned out very well.
-
I should add if you have a custom seat instead of a bench it will open up all kinds of room for a sub
-
ya i thought of bucket seats so i could build a cool center console but i wanna keep the truck lookin prety stock and how it looked since ive owned it since ive was 14 years old

i have 2 10 inch subs behind my stock seat. the seat is almost all the way up but they sound really good. i also have to tweeters on the dash and custom 61/2 inch speakers in the doors. i really like it.
-
thanks bigblue let me some pics
-
ok i will post some tomorrow because its dark here and im about to have to go to work.

Check out my page for some ideas. Page 6 under my 1997 Avenger shows my old system. Under my yellow truck's own page is some pics of the new console setup I'm building to hold 1 12"

I've seen 4 8's in these trucks, and 2 10's + 2 12's all in 1 box, but the depth behind the seat usually limits a person to using 8" subs or maybe shallow 10s. There are shallow-depth 12s out there too and I've heard good things about the JL Audio 'flat' subs. They are under 3" deep and 3" is about the depth limit at the bottom that you would want to avoid moving your seat.
-
Check out the Memphis S-class shallow mount subs. Memphis is known for big bass in small enclosures. I have two PR10's under the rear seat of my extended cab coupled with a 1000D and it is all you would ever want.

i have a shallow pioneer 10" sub behind my stock seat. i need to have the seat all the way back otherwise i cant really drive it and i have about 1" b4 the seat touches the sub box at the top. i found a really shallow box (2nd one i had to buy grrr) at "visions electronics" that mated with the shallow sub perfectly. sounds good too with my crappy amp! i also have four 6x9's in the back with a stiffening cap. no room behind there for nothing else haha. i dont know how to upload pics here so i guess its time to use the search function lol
-
i have two full size 10s. there are a few shallow 12s that you can get now. rockford, kenwood, kicker, jl all make them they are kinda expensive though.

2 10inch subs behind the seat

tweeter in the dash one on each side. my amp is under the driver side part of the seat i have to take the seat out to get to the whole thing. i think its 650watts not sure on that one.
-
wow i like all of what you did where did you get your box from who makes it do you know thanks
-
my dad made the box before i got the truck. its cheaper that way.
-
put the sub under your seat she will thank you for it later :o
-
nice lol ::)
-
hahahaha. nice. ;)
-
I put buckets in my truck so I could run a sub while sitting normal. If you could do buckets, I'd get a hold of fisher customs. www.fishercustoms.com He made me a sick box for my Cutlass and his quality is excellent.
-
as soon as i get enough money im going to get shallow mount 12s then i wont have to have as far up and it will hit really hard ;D ;)
-
Look into Stereo Integrity Magnum D2's. They're awesome subs. www.stereointegrity.com
-
it says they are out of them. i will probably go with the kicker ones or the rockford ones. i can get the kicker shallow 12s for like 140 a piece and i just have to modify the box i have now and im good to go.
-
Wanna be really cool? I know where you can get some awesome 8" subs. No body I know runs them but me around here. www.Sundownaudio.com Kicker and Rockford subs are not that great. Those SI's and the Sundowns would walk all over them.
-
i think im gonna run 8 inch subs cuz i have 2 boxes already that are ported just didnt have a use for them i just need ideas how to mount 6x9 and 6.5's and ones that sound good and maybe put speakers in the stock location under the dash just aftermarket ones and run and amp with it all or 2 if i have to one for the subs and one for the speakers any ideas or sugestions woul be greatfull 8)
-
I'm still working on that issue myself. Let me know when your ready to get some 8's. I could get you a killer deal on some Sundowns.
-
rockford is one of the best sub companies out there! i have 61/2s in my doors. there is a custom made box they are in. it works good. (pics on first page) i have a 4 channel amp running my subs and my mids and highs. works pretty good. i might get a mono amp for the subs to get more and change the 4 channel to 2 and do mids and highs with it.
-
You are very sadly mistaken if you think RF build the "best subs out there". By no means am I trying to be rude because I love stereo's but I really think you should look into some other brands that make 8's like Sundown, Digital Designs, Image Dynamics to name a few. They all make excellent products that are far better than anything Rockford has made. I will ship you my personal 8'' Sundowns if you'd like to demo them in your truck :).
-
i dont wants 8s. i already have jl 10s. i never said they were the best either i said they were one of them.
-
I had 2 MA Audio 12's with an amprack all behind my seat and my seat went all the way back its all just in figuring the angles, depths, and required air space. Also sealed boxes always require less space? Another option for you would maybe be 1 12. I have a 12 foot table saw which sure helped with it. Same thing could be done with a circular saw.
-
how deep is your box??
-
I molded a box out of fiberglass that holds a Kicker 12 inch shallow mount, a couple amps and a small storage space. Check out the write up http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=319401 (http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/showthread.php?t=319401)

I have 2 12" Kicker Comps and my seat is just a tad pushed forward. Almost all the way back though. Doesn't hit too bad off of a Boss 800W amp. Got the box from the Flea Market, it's just a run-of-the-mill regular cab box.
-
or you can do what i did and just port your bed and cab... and from there you can decide if you want to go with 10's or higher....also depending on what seats you have you may be able to fit 6x9's on back corner of cab where theres nothign there ... i mean as far as everythign go's im running 800wts to 2 kicker 10in L7's bridged and they hit hard enouph ...but i mean if you really want slap just go with a bigger amp!
-
I'm running a 12 behind the seat in a angled box that I bought at your average stereo shop. It turned out really well. Now I just have to get rid of all the rattles.
-
someone post some pics of the 12s box please. i just dont see how it will fit. my 10s make the seat go almost all the way up.
-
I'll try and get you a picure up by tommorow.
-
ok. thanks.
