Picked up a 1976 GMC long/wide today. It's all original. Even got the original bias-ply spare. It's ridden with cancer (*sigh*), so it'll be a challenge to bring 'er back. I got it from the original owner. Believe it or not, it's only got 75K on it, despite it's condition. No specific plans yet -- although I think I will probably transform it into a shortbed.
Parking it. Towed it home with a tow bar. It hasn't been started in about 2 years.

First a Chebby, now a Jimmy 8) Guess the Step was getting lonely :D It's sad that these trucks can be had with Extremely Low Miles, yet are in the poorest of condition >:( My '77 had barely 68,000 Original Miles on the 400, and the Motor blew not even a year after I got it.... The Body is covered with surface rust from being parked under a tree the majority of it's life, and the floor boards & rockers are toast, cause the windshield was poorly replaced..... :(
Good Save, and Hopefully the engine/trans won't give you alot of trouble... I like LWB's myself, but looking at your Great looking Step and Tow Crew, I can understand why you would go SWB....
-
Forgot to mention -- it was free.
Are A-pillar's replaceable? Can one be cut off another cab and used to replace the old one? What about the cowl? I haven't looked under the floor mats yet, but I have a feeling they'll be pretty messy, too.
-
yea man if you have the skills it can be replaced but if you dont want much work on your hands then you should get a rust free cab ;)
-
If you want to try fixing the Pillar PM me I have a rusty cab I need to cut up that area (from what I remember) is not pad just cost ya shipping :)
-
After a little more exploring today, I can see where the firewall has a couple of holes in it, as well. Although I only have experience replacing small areas of the floor board, I have a welder and really enjoy working with metal, so I feel confident I can do most of the repairs; however, if I decide that the cab isn't worth saving, what's a ballpark figure for a good cab replacement? $500? $1000? More/less?
-
Great find at a great price. That's what i'm looking for so I can take oldwhity off the road and start my rebuild.
I'm sure this one will end up the same caliber as the 80.
-
Awesome truck, great price. Why do you want to convert it to a short bed from a long bed? Im glad up here in the north we rarely have to worry about rust.. if I had a welder and a warm garage I would be like a kid in a candy store with that truck!
-
You can't beat that price ;D I am sure you will get it whipped into shape in no time. As for the price of a cab I am not sure but I am trying to buy a wrecked 83 with a good cab and its less than $500.
-
Got2haul, has there been any progress?
-
oldwhity,
Picked up an old cab to use for cancerous metal replacement, but that's it. I'm still working on the stepside and that will take priority for a while yet.
-
Gosh, I thought it was done. Sounds good.
-
Might have your work cut out for ya, the interior looks real good though.
-
BlueCollarRon,
I want to convert it to a shortbed for two reasons -- one, asthetics: the short bed lends itself easily to the hot rod style, and two, the challenge!
Chevyrado,
Might have your work cut out for ya, the interior looks real good though.
Boy, do I ever!
-
In my opinion it would look perfect if you just repaired it, prefer the long bed! But aesthetics is a subjective matter...
Anyways, it'll be nice to see your work w/ the old truck when you'll get to it, it's maybe even rustier than my '78 K10.
-
It reminds me a lot of my 77 when I started it. you ought to do it up like the stepside and make them a matched pair ;D I hope to do a blazer to match my c20 one day ;)
-
any progress on the new project? keep us posted 8)
-
Hey there I actually have a 1976 GMC C15 short bed with a 350 you don't see very many of them around for sale or just in general. It is green and pretty clean looking just wanted to tell you. Sorry I haven't ever looked or wrote in forums before.
-
Hey Green, start a thread in the welcome section and post some pics. I wanna see. ;D And welcome to the site.
-
Update: This truck has been relegated to donor status for my newly acquired 1980 short bed fleetside (see thread "Twins!). Plans for the short bed fleetside will be posted soon.
