Hi,
I bought a 87 1/2 ton 4wd long bed few moths ago ($500 ;D) they guy blew a head gaskit and then let it set for 6 months with water in the cylinders, rusted bad enough i had to bore it .40 over to clean up the pitting, seems how i am rebuilding the engine i went with flat top pistons and better cam I'm also swapping out the tbi to a holly 650 spread bore mech secondary. the truck has a 350/ granny 4 not sure what T case these trucks came with (208?) it has 4 shocks on the front dose this mean it has a heavy duty suspension? or were they all set up like this. i plan use the truck to pull my horse trailer with so I'm thinking nothing bigger than a 4 in lift, lock rite in the rear (8.5" 10bolt) i was wondering if you can put a lock rite in the front diff (Dana 44?)
i always hear the 205s are strong but i don't know anything about 208s are they any good? i only pull about 4000-5000lbs
i also want to use 33 12.50s will a 4" lift work? i assume that the diffs won't have any problems with this small of a tire
thanx

The 208 will work fine.

If it is factory, for an 87 it should be a 208 T case. So with the granny 4 low I assume you've got a manual transmission with it? If so, the SM465 Muncie is bulletproof. Makes for a great towing truck.

I have 33 12.50s on my truck with no lift! But it rubs if I lock the wheel all the way in one direction on the front right fender trim (juuuust barely). My diffs have been just fine for 10 years and about 50k miles.
Keep us posted on your project, post some pics! ;)

If this is a driver, you don't want a locker in the front.
-
And you should have a 10 bolt up front as well, not a Dana 44. Your axles will hold the 33's fine. Also, if you have lockings hubs on the front axle, I dont see what it would hurt running a lock right. If it binds up too much, only lock in one hub...

Yup those are 8 inch wheels, and thats quite a score for $500, sweet ride!

cool, i thought they looked wide. i think i have changed my mind on the 33s, can you squeeze 35.12s on 8" wheels or do you have to use 10"?
thanx

$500.00 for that constitutes outright grand theft auto... ;D

you can squeeze 12.50s on an 8" wheel. I have seen it done, but you have to take into consideration that it does make the tire stand taller. run a 6" lift and you will clear those puppies fine and dandy!!!
