Title: Air filter idea
Post by: team39763 on December 23, 2008, 05:39:28 pm
I decided I wanted to keep the stock look as far as outside appearance.  I was thinking I could snag the stock air cleaner assembly off my 454 dually and route the snorkel to a opening(cut by me) in the firewall(the upper part that meets the wiper cowl).  I figured I could throw in a nice K&N filter and it would be better than my open air filter sucking in all the hot air off the motor.  +Plus it'll look more like your average smallblock chevy.  What do you guys think?  Will a 3" snorkel/opening feed this combo?

That's how some of the factory and NASCAR cowl induction worked. The Z11 409 motors come to mind. I have an article with a 63 Z11 in it and it has that kind of induction. If you don't mind cutting your firewall, then go for it! A short run of 3" should be fine.

I had originally planned to use an actual nascar air cleaner, but those go for around $90+ on ebay.  Hopefully this works out good then.  I'm gonna go try it in a minute.

This has been discussed already.

Spectre also makes a dual inlet air cleaner that will bolt right in

I must have overlooked that one.  I remember it now, there were some good ideas mentioned.  Anyway, mine looks like it might work with a little trimming and an extra hose to run to the firewall.  I'll post up pics when I finish it this weekend.

I think you threw out any chance of a "stock look" out when you dropped in a carb'd LSX motor. :D
