Guy at work has a 87 c10 silverado and only has reverse and 1st gear. What is the problem? hes ready to drop the trans and put a new one in but i didnt want him doing that if that wasnt the problem. any help would be great. thanks andy

changing the fluids wont help unless it was out. could be a vacuum line or the trany is shot depends on what trany it is could also be a module? i think thats about it, try looking for a vacuum line that comes off the carb in goes to the trany should be passengers side of the engine against the firewall.

The 700R4 does not use any vacuum control. What happens? Will it not upshift or does it slip? Check the governor first. Pop the cover off and see how the gear looks.
-
lol yeah what he said, used to working on the 350t not a 700r4 the only one i did was my old lady's 94. for some reason even tho i knew the 700 came in the 87 i still was thinking about seeing the vacuum line on hers but it was mine that i seen it on. I'm losing it :'(

The 700R4 governor is under the round cap on the drivers side housing (rear ).It has a clip that holds the cap on.

ah, thank you very much. i imagine all you have to do is change the gears and all is well or is there more to the situation?
-
What gears are you referring too? You never answered my questions.
-
it wont upshift. doesnt slip at all

Then definitely check that #1 the TV cable is adjusted correctly and #2 the governer gear isn't applecored and that the valve moves freely.
-
thank you. ill go over and take a look
