Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on December 30, 2008, 08:18:55 pm
to be honest i do like it.
but their is still a dip in sputter issue im working out, and adjusting the high idle speed down.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: bigblue09 on December 30, 2008, 10:06:12 pm
how well does that spetre intake work? i have been wanting to do one but its expensive.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on December 30, 2008, 11:42:46 pm
actually works well.
its not really that expansive.
i have a total of less that $200 in all of the parts.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: bigblue09 on December 31, 2008, 10:49:06 am
oh ok. can you actually tell in the hp and mpg gains?
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: team39763 on December 31, 2008, 12:29:29 pm
I like how you set up that intake system.  I always thought a carb hat like that would choke the carb or disturb flow or something unless it was being fed by a supercharger or turbo.  Like bigblue09 said, can you tell a difference in HP?
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on December 31, 2008, 02:36:35 pm
well when i went to the track with it before it closed for the year it dropped my et by .2 and got 1 mph.
Gas mileage really stayed about the same since all i do is city and county driving. stayed right round 15.

well added some new pics and updated the page.

I was going to ask you about the seat brackets sure would have like to seen those before you put them in I've been working on a set from an 02 I have them in pieces but haven't worked on it lately.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on January 02, 2009, 04:55:01 pm
I've got a few pics of the brackets. I can describe in detail with pics when I get home.

I've got a few pics of the brackets. I can describe in detail with pics when I get home.
Thanks that will be cool sure won't hurt to get more ideas. I was going with the idea of trying to use the original bench seat tracks and building a frame but I don't want them to seat to high.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on January 02, 2009, 06:29:27 pm
i know about the height thing lol.
basically what i did on the back bolt holes was i used 2' angle and ran a peice between the factory seat bolt and the seat belt bolt. but they are offset so the angle iron was angled slightly.
then a peice of 3 inch long angle on the front bolt.
chopped the factory brackets off the tahoe seats down to a 1/8 of a inch off the sliders.
then c clammped angle iron 2 inches longer that the sliders and mocked it in.
then added a foot where the other bolt should be up front for factory buckets.
ill make sure to take some good pics of them in the truck so u can see what im talking about.

chris
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: JRConnieK10 on January 02, 2009, 06:38:38 pm
I already took the sliders down as low as I could. Thats why I think I was going to use the factory bench brackets bolt in place then build a frame across then I could move the whole seat front to back using the sliders if I get it done the way I think the power option to tilt the bottom up and down but manually move it frontwards. Its ashame most of that idea is a picture in my head I just need time to try and lay it all out. I'm putting my seat in my sons truck and putting this one in mine so his truck doesn't have anything in it so I can use his to mock everything up til I get it done then take mine out and put in his.

Post by: JRConnieK10 on January 02, 2009, 11:03:23 pm
Thanks for the pics I like the idea but mine also has the center console/middle seat. do you have or are you putting something in the middle? It sure looks like it takes a little work if I hadn't got them so cheap I would have done something else but I like these. Plus they have the seatbelts built in by the headrest.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on January 02, 2009, 11:08:52 pm
yea im building a full console with a 10" sub in the back.
also gonna house the amps, My CB, Cup holders, and a storage compartment i hope.
i got these seats pretty cheap.
i paid $75 for both with the factory console.
but im not using it and i sold it for $50 lol.
so i guess i got $25 in these seats.

Is that tweed?

Looks good!
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on January 11, 2009, 11:03:35 pm
actually yes it is.
i didnt get anything done this weekend on it since i had the rearend built up.
now its funny.
from a seat of the pants feel it pulls HARD out the hole then eases off then feels slower.
so think since the gear cnahge time to do some carb and timing tuning.
that and i gotta figure out a way to unadjust the rear brakes, they holding so much it a bit difficult to brake torque.

How hard was it to cover your dash? I was thinking about covering mine in something and was wondering. BTW yours looks great.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB

no lie it was  PITA!
especially in the middle when the hump comes over the cluster bezel.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: 69byrd on January 12, 2009, 04:49:40 pm
After hearing that I may have to go with a new dash pad or let someone cover it. I was also thinking of fiberglassing it and painting it but I was worried about it flexing when I put it back on.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on January 12, 2009, 11:07:23 pm
if your serious do it yourself and save some cash.
if yoiu start at that hump and go out you will be fine.

traded the other 2 and a lil bit and mean lil bit of cash for these rollers.
all they needed was a good cleaning and 1/2 a day of polishing.

Title: Re: my 85 LWB

That was the wheels I was trying to think of the other day. I would go with the 20x8 front and 20x10 rear, that setup would look great. I have a friend that has this setup on his truck and it looks sweet! Here are a couple of pictures of his 20x10s to help you make up your mind ;D

If you are going to go bigger, go for the 20's, they will be cheaper than the 18's as more manufacturers are using them.

well some bad news friends.
since the snow we had here last week when the truck bout got stuck its been acting weird.

well dug into it today.
got 3 cam lobes going down from what i see.
water pump is going out and alt wire is buring up.
so not too much work but i think im gonna take the motor out and do a fresh build.
some better heads, cam, lifters, roller rockers, high rise, ect...
so keep an eye here hopefully some magic is gonna happen.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: the dan on March 11, 2009, 12:36:04 am
how long ago did you get your cam? because i remember comp or crane had a bad metal batch, my buddys 454 had a smoked cam in the matter of a week.. they covered it though
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on March 11, 2009, 09:46:55 am
heck the cam has been in this motor nor for at least 3 years. but it didn't see daily driving till christmas 07'. and it only had maybe 1k miles. when I got the engine I tore it down cleaned it up and re gasketed it. and I replaced 2 bad lifters becaust they wouldn't prime. and they were lightly wore on the bottom then.
so I should have pulled it then. but this is giving me a chance th get a cam that breathes better. this one sounds dang good idling and romping but loses its breath at 4800. from what I can measure I got a older 274 comp.
but I'm hoping nothing else is hurt when I get to tear it down.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: eventhorizon66 on March 11, 2009, 10:43:13 am
That sucks about your cam.  But like you said it's an opportunity and fortunately you don't have to rely on it to get to work.

yea but the bad thing is the truck is the DD. well got a new intake and now on the look for a cam.

Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on March 12, 2009, 09:10:24 pm
lol its not too nice I just don't want to rack up the miles on it. I do drive it occasionally during the week but any kind of inclement weather and shes parked.
Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on March 20, 2009, 11:40:53 am
well got some new parts in and figured id post pics.
Like new Victor Jr intake, High flow 160 t-stat, High flow polished aluminum water pump, billet aluminum water neck.
thats what has arrived so far.
left on the list is roller rockers(steel ones), Cam & lifter kit (roller also), Aluminum Pulleys (crank, w/p, alt, and p/s if i can find one).
now im debating on heads. either just change the springs on these or find some ole 300 hp heads or just build a set or 882's.

Title: Re: my 85 LWB
Post by: KoolerSL2 on April 07, 2009, 10:40:56 pm
hey guys id figure id give an update.
well cam has arrived today.
summit kit 1105. 282/292 split duration
its a hyd flat tappet, i wanted roller but they are so expensive now ill stick with tried and true.
after doing some calling i finally got specs on my heads and have better heads than i thought.
turns out i got 1.94I / 1.50E valves and 64 cc chambers.
so its been arranged for them to be ported and worked over a bit when the motor is pulled.
i know their not the best but id rather work with what i got then go off and spend close to a grand on heads.
also if anyone wants to chime in heres my parts list i still have to get in.
all from summit heres the part numbers.

SUM-141506: Steel roller tip rockers
SUM-174000: up to .550 lift valve spring kit with locks and seals
SUM-G3964: aluminum water pump pulley
SUM-G3966: aluminum Crank pulley
SUM-G2968: aluminum Alt Pulley
PRO-141-130: Proform Tall centerbolt valve covers with chevy logo

hey guys sorry its been a long time since ive updated this post.
well ive got all the kinks finally worked out.
i had to change the air cleaner setup, some odd reason it was choking up the engine.
re-did the exhaust to a somewhat classic setup. ( Thrust welded mufflers turned down )
finally got new tires in the back, and working on new wheels still and finding a chevy grille setup. also some doors!
pass side door window regulator broke luckly in the closed position.
anyway some fresh pics and a small video of the new engine setup will be in the next post!

Looks great and sounds awesome!!  Very nice work!!  I am hoping to replace my 305 with a similar built motor.

Looks good.

Your new intake is too big, you should be running a dual plane high-rise and your thermostat is too cold.
160 causes much more engine wear than a 180.

My two cents.

Nice truck though.

eeh i know the intake deal but i couldnt pass it up as cheap as i got it.
and as far as the t-stat the truck normally is around 160 on cruise and 180 to 190 in town.

thanks jason for the comment

well i have to say this.
i hate it when im proved wrong.
took the truck to the track this firiday only to be dissapointed, BAD...
the truck ran the exact same time as it did before! no faster no slower. 10.0 @ 74mph.
but in the burnout box it felt like a demon where as before i had to coax it to do a burn out.
i think i know where the problem is.
Its going to be either the intake ( before mentioned to large ), or i need a bigger stall.
my trans is going to the shop this week to get rid of the 4800 rpm shift out and have it raised to 5500.
but i dont know where else to turn.
my cousin built a similar motor in a short bed with same gearing and tire size that ran in the LOW 8's!
im about to get very frustrated.

Make no mistake, dual plane manifolds are a crutch.  In an ideal world all performance carbureted manifolds would be single plane.  But the problem is many carbs out there do not provide adequate atomization with the lower vacuum signal of the single plane.  Also, if the cylinder heads feature intake ports with too low velocity for the intended application the problem worsens.  But where carb atomization is adequate and intake port velocity is high, single planes will always be the better choice in performance applications.  But if you plan to keep your current carb and it proves itself to be inadequate, in terms of atomization, then yes a good high rise dual plane may be in order.

Also, this being a completely new combination, your problems are likely stacked.  My approach would be to make one change at a time.  For example, your new engine my need higher shift points now to take advantage of the power increase in the upper rpm range, so that's great start.  Also, your stall speed may be too low for the cam.

Please keep us posted on the results as you experiment.

yea kinda did.
turns out with the new setup it didnt like that dual snorkel hat.
so i switched to a 14 x 5 K&N setup.
well heres some pics of the new intake.
Driveability issues have been %80 solved. still need a bit more converter.
and there's a bit of a timing issue im trying to solve.
im showing 39 degrees advance at idle for the truck to run good.
im thinking the newer harmonic balancer's had the timing marks in a different spot.
anyway enjoy.

well an update after a few months!

truck has showed some driveabilty issues with the carb that i havent been able to tune out.
so a possible change here soon to a different carb will probally be in order.
also for some dang reason a head gasket started seeping oil and has really ticked me off.
going friday to get a pair of doors off a donor truck and a tilt steering column.
along with some misc interior pieces and carpeting.
also a repaint is probally going to happen this winter.
more to come.

ended up only getting 1 door, could not find a decent drivers door.
plus my door is still good im just gonna get a window regulator and reseal it.
got the tilt column in and im amazed.
No slop, everything works and got it Pulled for $79!
door was more though as it was $140.
for everyone start checking your metal recyclers, the cash for clunkers vehicles, parts can be sold off of!
just cant sell the main body or engine.
i might be heading back to get a full 700r swap from a donor 91 burb.

UPDATE:

sorry its been so long since ive logged on here or even posted.
but got some good news and bad.

the good.
got a lot of detail stuff worked out and got paint and all the materials waiting

the bad...
after numerous problems setting the engine up and trying to get it to run properly i have gave up...
after a lot of diagnosing and testing it looks to be this cam has begun wearing out 4 lobes, lifters will not hold their prime, and i am fed up...
im in a dispute with summit over these grievances, but God knows if they will stand behind their products.

so if this all goes to heck im saying to heck with small blocks, stripping this engine of usable parts and selling them and buy a BBC crate engine...

Your quote "there's a bit of a timing issue im trying to solve.
im showing 39 degrees advance at idle for the truck to run good."

Could your distributor be a tooth off? had this on my '82. The problems you are having sound very similar to the symptoms mine showed including the advance. ran like a top after lifting and moving the distributor a tooth also put the timing marks dead on.

ThAt issue was fixed.
Had to replace the balancer.

What led you to replace the balancer? Just the timing issue (I presume the balancer had slipped)? Did you have any vibration issues at all throughout the RPM range?

thats kinda surprising on the cam i jun summit cams in my stuff and knock on wood havent had a problem yet. had the 1103 in my 82 ta for about 4yrs or so. running a similar cam in my k10.

Well after 2 hrs on the phone I have decided to never purchase any type of engine component from summit racing again. Their house brand are cheap Chinese stuff and they won't stand behind their products.
Best in customer service my you know what...

This motor is coming apart and being sold.
Most everything is still good but Im keeping the long block for a boat anchor. Lol...

Bought a 468 today and gonna just drop it in and go.

In 16 years I've never had a bad summit cam. I'm not saying you don't just I've had good luck with them. Now I'm really surprised they told you to pound sand. When did you buy the cam?
Title: Re: my 85 LWB

it has been over the "90 days" but this engine doesn't have many miles at all....
but after some digging through my emails between summit when i first re did the engine and when i ordered the parts i seen something.

when i went to order the cam i told the "Tech" that i have high seat pressure large valve springs, but he still reccomended the cam that went down.

i should have went with my gut and got a roller and now wouldnt have to go back into the engine.
