Title: Drive line vibe.
Post by: 85 lowrider on January 06, 2009, 08:59:46 pm
Hey. I have an 85 LWB that is bone stock. I picked it up with only 75000 original miles on it. It has a 305 with a 3-speed automatic. I'm not sure what tranny it is, I was just told it is a 3-speed. The truck has a drive line vibration at highway speeds 55-65. Some mechanic friends of mine have had a few of these trucks and they said that this is common with this tranny, and it is coming from the tranny. This doesn't sound right to me and would like someone else's opinion. I'm going to lower it, 5-7, and don't want to have any drive line problems. Thanks for the help.

I'd probably have the tires and/or the driveshaft checked.  Onetime I bought a older Ford truck and it had a vibration at highway speeds.  I got the rear tires balanced and it went away.  A buddy of mine said he had a funny vibration in his truck and it turned out that the driveshaft was starting wobble.  He got it fixed and the truck drove smooth.

I'll 3rd that. The 1st thing I thought of was the tires and then u-joints.

Definitely check your u-joints!

I checked the u-joints, and they seem fine. The vibraton seem like a driveline vib. I have a lifted jeep cherokee, and that had a vib until I shimed the rear end. It seem like the same type of vib, not a tire thing. Is there any way of checking the drive shaft my self? Could there be anything with the tranny? The people I talked to are convinced that it is the tranny. Not sure if I beleive that, but I don't want to hurt the tranny either.
