What's the requirements on Cats. I live in a non-emissions state and my truck's an '85, I want to run dual exhaust with no cats and cherry bomb mufflers. Can I do that or am I supposed to keep the Cats?
-
You are suppose to keep em
BUT since you dont have emissions I would toss em..
-
Any other inputs?
Because I couldn't find the EPA regulation that sates what year models are exempt from Cats, I was thinking it started in like 1986 but I'm not sure.
-
if you dont have emissions then i dont think you have to have them. thats all thats keeping mine on. i would toss it.
-
OK then do you have to even have to have a muffler whats the point if you don't have emissions test ? other than being just plain loud ;D
-
If it came from the factory with a catalytic converter it should have one. If you have no emissions testing then don't worry about it.

Pretty much.
okay one other question about this. Say I remove the Cat and drive through a state that requires them (Say Ohio), will I get in trouble or could I get in trouble for not having one?
-
Here in West Texas,(and probably the rest of the state) you have to have them if the vehicle came with them. We dont have emissions testing, but they look for them when doing an inspection. They dont look for the smog pump, just the cat, cold air inlet tube, stock type snorkel aircleaner, and that stupid little heat riser tube. I couldnt get Old yellers truck inspected the last time because it didnt have the stock aircleaner on it. It wouldnt fit with the new engine, so I had to put an open element aircleaner on it. Doesnt matter, we will be getting classic tags for it so no more inspections. As far as the heat riser tube, it has to be there even if you have headers, but I dont have to worry about cats because when it came out in 81 it didnt have them because it was a 3/4 ton. Most of the cats running around here on these trucks are gutted anyway.
As far as getting a ticket for not having them, I have never seen a Trooper check for emmision components, so I doubt it unless he is being a jerk. If its too loud, that may be a different story.I dont know.

It all depends on your state or municipality.
In Va, we do not need mufflers.
In Va, if the truck came with a cat, for annual safety inspections, it has to have one on it.
There is no emissions testing, but, you won't get your annual sticker if it has no cat and it came with it.
My 79 has two cats (duals) and NO mufflers. And it passes every time.
Check your state codes!

In louisiana if it looks sort of like a car/truck then it's legal to drive...I mean the last inspection I had on the truck was like this:
"turn on the lights", "now the hazards", "put it in reverse", "okay it's good"....
-
haha. thats how it is in georgia other than emissions. if you have lights turn signals and a tag your good to go.
-
i know in MD and DE if the vehicle came with a cat it must always be on but what can be done is eather put a cat shell on a strait pipe making a fake cat or just punch one out, the second option to me make a lil deeper sound so its the one i go with
-
okay, well for what I want to do with the exhaust there's not room for cats, so they're gone...
-
Federal law is that you can't remove any emissisons equipment. However if they don't check you for it they'll never know and if they should change the state laws later it's not hard or expensive to add the bullet-type cats later. It's not like if they catch you they'll take your ride and crush it. Barrow County GA doesn't have emissions either and I've never had a problem even running straight pipes.
-
yea. i live in henry county ga and we are so close to atlanta we have to have emissions so i have to have cats till it is considered an antique. :-\
-
Really it can boil down to weither or not you get pulled over by a Rookie Officer, or one that is having a bad day..... Here in Washington, anything over 20(now anything older than '96) doesn't get inspected, or is inspected as much, but if it came with Emissions Equiptment, then they must be in place, and functioning correctly..... Usually they won't hassle you for not having proper equiptment, but if you make yourself noticeable, then they are more than happy to put you in your place(ie visual inspect your vehicle on the side of the road, and then write you a notice stating your vehicle needs to be State Inspected, which will also have a $150-500 Repair Fine).....

in MD if you make to much noise and get pulled over the cops can do the same thing "give a inspection ticket" that means you have 30 days to fix the problem. that being said when i did my exhaust on my 4x2 i had headers right after that i had punched out cats then glass packs then 45ⁿ right after that i had 3',tips 5" wide wish i had more back pressure tho you lose a lot of low end, IMO use cats it will still be loud if you use the high flow.
-
how would it perform if i get 2 cats and gutted them?? i really dont want to spend $160 for 2 high flow cats.

Well, today I just got done removing the egr, charcoal canister and the cruise control (it's broken anyways). This truck doesn't have a smog pump though, that I can see. So other that the Cat it has on it, all the other emmissions crap has been removed. I'm still gonna have a Cherry Bomb Muffler on it to keep it fairly quiet. This is the muffler I'm gonna get:

like the same set up that i had she will def breath a lot better but you lose the low end. i would if you going to punch them out run the pipes over the rear and out the back if you leave the cats intact i would then 45 them right after the cab
-
okay so I just cut off my "cat" and guess what, it's already been hollowed out. well anyways I'm gonna replace it with a section of straight pipe and call it good. It'll actually probably sound a bit better cause there was still some like stuff inside it blocking the exhaust from having just a straight through flow.

i have true dual dynomax exhaust on my truck with no cats and 2 turbo mufflers i havent gotten pulled over yet...i live in maine so i dont know what its like in the other states
-
I also live in maine...we only have emissions testing in part of the state (not where I live), but to get an inspection sticker all of the emissions control equipment is SUPPOSED to be there and functioning no matter where you live. My truck is a 3/4 ton with heavy duty emissions and did not come with a cat from the factory....but I did remove the AIR pump and charcoal canister, put headers on the truck and did away with the EGR that was on it and I've never had any trouble getting an inspection sticker. The hardest time I ever got was for being too loud - custom true dual 2 1/2" exhaust with glasspacks will do that. I'm with the others that say chuck the cats but don't make it too loud. If you make it really loud you'll draw more attention to yourself than you want. On a side note, I think you should have some sort of muffler (cherry bomb or whatever you like) on it to act as a spark arrestor at the very least - especially if you go with a short exhaust system dumping in front of the rear tire.
