My tv cable just simply will not self adjust on my truck.
carb is a holley 600
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D700202&N=700+115&autoview=sku with this geometry corrector
http://store.summitracing.com/partdetail.asp?autofilter=1&part=SUM%2D700202&N=700+115&autoview=sku and this throttle bracket
I put a new detent cable on it and no change. I push the button and push the cable all the way towards the firewall and I don't feel any resistance and it does not self adjust. Even putting it at wot at the carb doesn't make it self adjust.
Oh and the intake manifold is aftermarket. What am I doing wrong?
-
If the cable does not self adjust when you pull the throttle to WOT, it is too long. I have seen several different lengths offered. You should feel tension (good tension) when you depress the button and pull the cable all the way back towards the firewall. I wish I could be more helpful as far as pointing you in the direction of the correct length, but I'm not sure about that. I think it's supposed to be the 40" version.
But you are on the right track with that geometry corrector, that is simply a cheaper version of the Sonnax bracket.
-
I don't know. I bought the new cable from oreilly auto and it's the exact same length as the old one. Maybe with this set up all the way in is where its supposed to be. I won't actually be able to test drive the truck for awhile.
-
If it's not the length of the cable itself, I'd say the bracket is mounted too close to the throttle linkage. I definitely would not drive the truck until you get that cable to self adjust. Don't just assume that all the way in is where it's supposed to be.
To confirm the proper TV operation, you need to pull your trans pan and see if the TV plunger is being pushed all the way down in its bore when the carb is pulled to WOT. I bet it's not.
BTW the second link in your first post is just a duplicate of the first link. What bracket are you using?
-
not sure why the same link came up twice ???

What trans do you have? Are you sure it's connected to the TV valve in the trans?
-
700r4 and yes its connected for sure. If you take the cable off the linkage and pull it by hand you can feel it get pulled back in.
-
Is there any resistance in the cable when it's attached to the linkage if you pull on it?
-
I had to go out and check. There does seem to be some slack in it but not much. So chances are the stock length cable is too long with all these aftermarket parts?
-
and before I changed to an aftermarket intake, carb, etc everything worked fine
-
How does it shift with the plunger all the way toward the firewall?
-
I won't be able to test drive it for awhile

What I have found (with Holley carbs) is the carb itself is harder to open, as in overcomming the accelerator pump, ect. This makes the round rod that the pedal is made out of flex a little, also the bracket you got to mount the cable is likely flexing also, all the ones I've seen for the Holley are cheesy except the Bowtie Overdrive set-up. Have someone work the pedal & watch the bracket, then open the carb by hand & see if it clicks. What should work for you (but not the correct way, of coarse) is to work it out under the hood to get your adjustment, but pull the cable off of the carb once you think it's set & have someone floor it inside, then compare where the TV cable (once pulled) lines up with the pin on the carb & adjust if needed another click or so. My thought is the flexing is just enough to not let the cable "snap" to the next groove, so it just sits there not adjusted. Check it out & report back! Lorne

the brackets are actually very thick and stiff. no flexing at all. Almost seems like the cable is too long now. Possibly a bad cable straight from oreilly's? but then again the old cable was fine when the stock intake and quadrajet was on the motor.
-
That's the bracket I'm familiar with...A new one I've seen, but haven't tried yet is the one that goes to both Left carb studs.
Does your pedal seem stiffer to push down with the Holley?
I just noticed in your first post that you did try manually working the carb...so at this point does the TV cable limit the carb from going to full throttle because it won't adjust? Pull the cable off the carb, open the carb & pull the cable to varify that distance. Can you feel slight resistance AS SOON as you start to pull the cable or is there slack at the beginning?
The moral of the story....The thing worked with the Q-jet ;) Let us know what you find, Lorne

The tech at summit thinks I have a ford throttle linkage on my holley which has my geometry corrector in the wrong spot. I need to search for some pics of ford linkages I suppose.
-
well I have the right throttle bracket. I played with the detent. Running it click by click by hand and pushing the button. Now it will self adjust but it only goes one click. With the quadrajet set it was out 3 to 4 clicks if I remember right.
-
If there is no flex at the throttle/TV bracket and it is self adjusting at all, I'd say that's probably OK. But the only way to be 100% sure would be to pull the pan and visually inspect the position of the TV piston when a helper holds the throttle at WOT.
-
putting the rear axle of the truck up on jack stands and running it in gear to see if it shifts, bad idea right? Right now its just a cab sitting on the frame. can't actually drive it.
-
a lil, you seen the cartoons when some one is on an exercise bike and the bike comes off the wheel stand then they go fly into something it would prob be about the same affect. but if your going to do it use some wheel caulks and make sure nothing is in front of you but unless you live on the highway or a high traffic area the road should be good enough not like your going to the store in it ;) but i would suggest it in less you live out in the country.
