I'd really like to see my truck in gloss black when its all said and done. I might attempt to do this myself in my shop. From what I have heard your body work has to be perfect. Any light you experts can shed on this subject? Thanks, Andy
-
Lots of work and alot of wet sanding to perfection. Oh but so worth it when its done.
-
Any flaw will be visible in black especially in the sunlight. I would never do a black truck outside of a paint booth. If uyou have to wet sand and buff black it may come out looking good until the sunlight hits it. White is the easiest color and most forgiving.
-
Sorry Vile I think what I meant to say was block sanding and then more block sanding til ya get it just right then block sand some more. Then it will come out nice.
-
All body panels perfectly strait. prime the heck out of them then block sand until your finger prints are gone. Then prime the crap out of it again, then block sand until your fingers are gone. Then several more coats of primer, and wet sand that.
-
As you can tell, there's a lot of prep work involved. I sprayed my 70 Monte black and it took forever to get it close to being ready. It looks the best when it's clean though.
-
thanks for the help guys.....hmm...well, seems like alot of work for my shop conditions though. i thought about making a booth with a 2x4 structure and plastic for the top and sides to keep the dust out. but black sounds like alot of work....not sure i want to put that much effort into the paint process and it would probably turn out crappy with my luck anyways if i did. i cant really think of any other color that could make a 73-80 look good.....maybe gold or pewter? Thanks Andy

All the extra work is totally worth it if you want it black
-
If you do make a temporary spray booth, just use 1 x 3 with 3mil or 6mil poly. It's cheaper. ;D
-
wow. they all look good. I love your black truck JR and Chevyrado's truck are beautiful too! I really like they gold. i think it would look great with black tinted windows and a lift. Is gold hard to paint? i would figure since it is somewhat close to white(far as lightness) it would be about the same. Im not saying im going to do a half job on my body work but i'm not so sure that im good at it. Thanks Andy
-
Well as far as spraying the actual paint black would be easier than gold. Gold and silver are about 80% or more metallic. The more metallic the more Chance of metallic sags, or tiger striping. strips of light and darker coloring. But they do show allot less sins from the prep stages.
-
well, not sure if want streaks either...hmmm. maybe white wouldnt be so bad after all. i really like the looks of dunediggers white 80 chevy.
-
I like white, here's my old '77

I painted that truck in body class and it wasn't too bad at all and looked pretty good when I got done. It was an easy color to work with. It was ford ultra white, dunno the code it was the brightest paint the color guy could come up with and it looked like it glowed on a cloudy day. ;D
-
im re painting my truck black. luckly my dad is a painter for delta and does it for a living. ;D
-
I reckon matt camouflage (if thats how you spell it!) is the way to go. I'm still going orange and black tho when time permits ;)
-
orange and black looks really good together. how are you going to do it? 2 tone?
-
Yup 2tone for me. Primarily hugga ish orange with black roof, black middle 3rd down each side and two black stripes on the hood!
One of the guys on here done some artwork to show what it would look like. well sexay ;)
-
well, i think im going to risk a silver paint job and tan interior. black just seems like too much work at the time. I might do it to a later 73-87 that i'll do. i just want this truck done so i can drive it to the county fairs in the area in june and july. I wont be finished by then but hopefully it will look good by then.
-
im doing black and silver 2 tone. black on the bottom and from the body line up silver. its gonna look good. ;D
-
Black is hard to paint but it looks good when its done right.
-
yea i know. luckily my dad is a painter for delta. been doing it for 30 years. think we got it covered. :D i hope. lol
-
you lucky bugger. Im in the process of painting my truck to. I finally got done sanding the truck now just waiting to go to a heated shop to paint it. If you do this by yourself wow does it ever feel good. Im 17 and man do I have respect for these body shops. seems like all i ever do is work on my truck, go to school and work. but i every weekend I find time for some partying ;D just sucks the next doing body work lol
-
Back when I first started out I can remember the other guy in the shop, ( two years older than I ) and myself coming to work still whailed from the night before. Caught heck from our boss a few times for showing up wrecked. ::)
-
im 17 too. thats about all i do anymore too. im trying to save some money now to get some stuff for it but its really hard. :-\ most of my money goes to gas and food.
-
well, i'm 19. work 40hours and 5 days a week(more if there is snow) go to college at night and still find time to work on my truck in a cold, none insulated, breezy barn. gotta love it though. i think after i'm done with this truck i'll be building a small pole barn or 2 car garage in my backyard. be a nice present for my dad too(restoring 67 mustang).......or i'll just buy another 73-87 ;D
-
glad to hear theres more people like me out there. when i was looking for a truck I wanted kinda a fixer uper. so I found this 84 c10 with 150,000 km on her. all original bought it off a guy who started restoring it but ran out of money and patience. so i offered him 1500 cash and i bought her. I like fixing things and trying new things to. I would buy a fixer uper anyday then a truck that is in perfect condition. just doesnt feel the same if ya dont put some blood sweet and tears into your own baby. if ya no what I mean
-
dang straight! its hard work to redo a truck but once its done it will be so worth it. I was a work one day and rolled through a little town and saw my truck for sale. went there straight after work and bought it after lookin at it for 5 minutes. kind of a mistake not lookin it over but i'm making it work(lot more rust than met the eye). I cant wait to finish it for this summer. it'll have a 73-80 front doghouse, 6in of lift, 35's and brand new paint. it'll be fun. ;D later plans(for this fall) for it is a built 350 and a 4 speed but the old worn out 350 and 700r4 will work for now. got plenty of blood into it right now...tears are going to come when she's finished haha
-
lol. my dad bought my truck barand new in 1987 and kept it bone stock except for the audio. i have put some stuff into it. some blood and sweat. money has gotten tight so im trying my hardest to save money with my part time job. lol. she will be coming together soon with the paint when my friend finishes his shop. doing true duals with my tax refund. lower it about 3/5. new rims and a new motor eventually i hope. lol.
