Title: I need help with custom seat mounts.
Post by: team39763 on January 13, 2009, 02:16:50 pm
I have a racing seat I want to mount, but I don't want to use the bucket seat sliders that I had.  They didn't fit in the first place, and would've let me eat the steering wheel in a front impact.  Not only that, but it's easier for me to just make these L shaped brackets since I'm not much of a fabricator.
Here's a drawing of my plan.  The bracket will be bolted and welded at the yellow points near where the stock brackets bolted in.  Then the seat will be bolted down to the bracket with good hardware.  The bracket itself will be 1/8" steel(or do I need thicker?).

Will this work?

I think you will find the seat will sit up way too high if you make your brackets like that

I just went and checked on that and it should be ok.  The seat is very low and should be perfect.  Other than that, do you see any reason not to build it like that?  Will 1/8" steel be thick enough?  I need to be able to bend it for that 90* angle.

If they are ok height wise then yes that should work fine,I think you might have to add some kind of an extra support halfway in between though

Personally I would lay out some 3/16" flat and bend it over like the outer side and mount it.

Are you planning to use 1/8" angle or flat stock?

You can buy seat mounts already made to fit our trucks.

I was planning to use 1/8" flat stock.  Should I be using angle?

I'll look and see if they have 3/16 at the store, that might work out better...I'll check.

That makes sense.

I wish I would have seen those a few months ago when I wasted my money on these stock bucket brackets(which still didn't fit) from the junkyard.  I don't have the money for those now.

You have Stock bucket brackets from a 73-87?  The required an inner mount and Jeff has a template on his site for them.

Yeah, I got them off a 80something model, but I didn't understand why they didn't fit in the truck.  I thought I had everything.  Which guy is Jeff?

Jeff = bigblock73

There is a template you can print out on that page, but there is a "hump" in the center floor for the seat to mount.

It's almost done.  I used a combination of angle and flat stock.   But my goodness it added some weight.  I guess I'll just have to shave some weight somewhere else...probably gonna install a newer model aluminum radiator with the plastic tanks.  Thanks for the help guys.

How do these work, are they adjustable? I'd like to get some old school low back bucket seats for this truck but I know that I would need new brackets for that, and want the seats to be able to slide back and forth at least a little bit....
