Title: How many people prefer to use Paypal?
Post by: Captkaos on January 20, 2009, 02:32:04 PM
I am thinking about no longer accepting paypal for payment on items in the store.  I want some feedback.  What do you guys think?  If there is sufficient response I will just keep it.

Chris,
I'd rather see their fees go into your pocket.  I have a similar situation with Amex.  We pi..ed of enough people years ago when we did not accept it.  Now I smile and take their card, but it does cost us more.

Don't you have to deal with that stupid charge for using PayPal?  Like 3% or something?  I bought a roller cam for my Lincoln from a guy in AZ and I used paypal but he added the charge on top of that.  Just seems stupid to me.  When I sell stuff I use money orders.

I understand the cost!  I use it daily.  But it does not cost you a dime unless someone uses it to pay you. Otherwise it costs you nothing so why consider closeing it?    Its an Option in the least.    If that is the only way someone will pay why turn them away.

Keep it.  Options are what people want.

Dan, you know exactly what I am talking about then.  Their fees are about 3%, but there are so few people that use it.  I haven't decided, I am just thinking.

I will NEVER take AMEX though, so you are a better man than I am.  My merchant account got screwed up once after I took over and allowed it and I probably lost $200 over the course of a month and I couldn't figure out where it was going...  UNTIL AMEX sent me my "new" monthly statement.

I used to not take Discover, but I do now since there is enough people using it and I take a enough hit with them.  "use the card that pays you back" in only good when you are buying.  hehehe.

buddy84GMC, yes I do have to deal with that.  One big ticket items like the One Piece Group Buy where I dropped the price drastically had the 3% cutting my profit enough that I refused to accept it.

I voted that I use PayPal but You have to roll with the times.  If the volume isn't there to justify the costs, either monetary or manpower, then it only makes sense to cut it.  I use the heck out of paypal when proprietary instant payment systems aren't offered by the seller but only in the way that it most benefits me.  Few to no direct transfers from my bank account, all charges to my CC.  There are too many horror stories of problems with both sellers and joe-blow-sellin-a-part when you pay via paypal and use direct debit from a checking account.

I stopped dealing with paypal and Ebay after all the scams starting surfacing. I was getting 'scam mail' from (supposedly) both ebay and paypal asking for personal information, 'urgent reply immediately' and 'a problem with your account' messages. After making some phone calls I was told nothing was wrong with my accounts and they were not real emails and not to reply to them.
Anyway, I closed my accounts and I use a secure card that I'm comfortable with for anything questionable.

I like Paypal for shopping on Ebay. Makes me feel safer doing so. For this site though, I would trust Chris with my credit card info so I would bypass Paypal and their bloated fee AND exchange rates and just email Chris with my credit card number direct.

I take PayPal in my racecar tool business, which seems to make it easier for the Customers. PayPal's a bit of a pain to communicate with, the 3% doesn't exactly warm my heart, and like eBay they can do whatever they want when they want to do it, though I haven't seen as much goofy stuff; eBay likes to mess with their Sellers.
A friend of mine adds the 3% as a surcharge when the Buyer uses PayPal, with about 50/50 results as far as his Customers getting ticked off about it.
When I'm buying parts, I rarely have the time for Money Orders or Cashier's Checks, so I usually use my credit card or PayPal. Taking credit cards is a whole other bunch of stuff & % to deal with, so I don't take credit cards yet.
Good luck with whatever you decide; it's not easy running a business in a competitive market!

I know Kelly wants to start buying some stuff from you for the trucks in the near future.  I personally like Paypal for places such as ebay, but as long as you still accept credit/debit cards, I don't see a real need for paypal.  We usually pay for everything with our debit card because we have a great rewards program with our debit card, and it is so much simpler than trying to pay the credit card bills at the end of the month.  If we don't have the money, then we don't need it.

Paypal is a safer way to pay on ebay because they protect your purchases, but we don't need that kind of protection from this site.

***IMPORTANT***Wait till someone reverses charges on you! I was unaware Paypal can do this. Here's my scenario. I sold an item on eBay. Buyer pays me with Paypal. I ship the item. Her account was overdrawn so paypal subtracts the payment and freezes my account. Basically she paid me via paypal with a bad check - and didn't have a credit cardbacking up her account. Because paypal subtracted her payment from my account I went into negative dollars. I owed people money for things that I purchased on eBay and had to ask them (nicely) for over a week to wait for payment until this person got their act together.
I agree paypal is convenient and I'll continue to use them in some "very limited" capacity.

In my opinion I like it because it gives you protection from unscrupulous sellers, I've ran across several on E Bay and other sites, that I would have lost my payment for an item or the item received was not even close to what was represented and if it was not for PayPal I would have been out of luck. I'm not grouping you into this category, but I know if other buyers that are doing business with you for the first time and have had similar experiences, they may feel the same way, and I don't like to send  a money order or give my credit/checkcard number to someone I've never done business with before, they're a long distance from you and nothing to stop them from taking the funds and giving you the old it's on it's way, check in the mail routine, and getting your funds back would be a nightmare if not impossible. I would recommend still accepting it with pricing adjusted to offset the fees if that is how they prefer to pay, Fast Eddie 59

I use it on fleebay and a few other places, but I would rather just use my cc and skip the 3% fee to help keep prices down.
I would understand if you added the 3% on to a paypal purchase.
So I am good with whatever you decide to do.

I prefer PayPal and this is why...

It's because I think PayPal is the best thing since sliced bread...er...maybe since a broadband connection.  My Dad has written a couple of books and we sell A LOT of them online via the small website I built (my first ever, which I just realized I need to update a little):  www.porchtales.com  Actually, for a self-published book we have done extremely well -- we just did our 6th printing of 1000 books (meaning we have already sold just under 5000 of 'em) -- most people who self-publish a book do good to get rid of 10 or 20 to family and friends.

We sell the books for $14.50 (or so) and PayPal charges us so little per book it's not even a good tax write-off.  They also keep track of whether the purchase is made from your home state or out of state (which only matters for tax purposes).  People who order from TN are charged the extra amount while people outside of TN are not charged the fee -- and it's automatic.

I'm sure PayPal isn't perfect and undoubtedly people have had some bad personal experiences here and there, but overall they were 100% exactly what we needed for our products.  I can see absolutely no down-side.

At any rate, I'm all about supporting Paypal simply because they make it possible (and so extremely simple) for small business owners to accept credit cards (with or without a PayPal account -- which is really important!!), have shopping carts, etc.

I have used paypal for a long time, but as a seller on e-bay it does have its quirks.

Chris, as long as you take Visa or Master Card I wil be good to go when I get my list of parts together :)

My biggest issue with this is all the scams I have been the end of.
I had a customer that had never bought from me purchase door panels, kick panels and dash overlay and paid with paypal. I called the customer and left a message to verify the year of truck (door panels and guage overlay didn't match) called the 3rd day and still no answer so I left another voicemail.  I shipped it 3 days later and 4 days later Paypal reversed the charges and it clears and emails me on the 5 day that they were reversed.  I called and they stated that the person who made the purchase "stole" the money from another user and the user found out reported it and paypal put the money back in their account, by removing it from mine.  I told them that they had ordered items and where shipped the day prior and I have no money and no one was answering the phone.  Needless to say I caught all but 1 item the overlay and got them others to stop shippment.  But I was still out the overlay cost and paypal did nothing for about it.

Now immediately I call all people that I don't know or seen before that pay with paypal to let them know there would be a delay until it clears, unless I know them.  If they don't answer I leave a message indicating their order will be canceled and paypal refunded if I don't hear from them in 24 hours.

The fees aren't what the issue is.  As far as I am concerned 2 people were running a scam on paypal and paypal backed them up as paypal stated the original customer took money that wasn't theirs from someone elses account.

I had this happen again (the refunding part on behalf of paypal, not the shipped to customer and lost parts) and I had waited long enough for it to clear and it was pulled the day after.  Paypal only protects the buyer and these people were exploiting it.

On top of the above, I had called other customers telling them there would be a delay until payment had cleared and they went nuts.  Think is, Credit cards are cleared immediately in comparison.  I have had the same issue before and customers using cards, but the card company paid for the delivered items when I had proof of delivery.

The way our site works people can use any credit card (no PayPal account required) to make the purchase.  Most people don't actually use PayPal -- they use their cards and skip the PayPal part so the transfer is instant.  I wonder if you can set up PayPal just to accept credit cards and credit cards only?  Basically just use PayPal to use the credit acceptance and ordering features -- I doubt it's possible to shut out PayPal users, but who knows.  Does that make sense?

Do you have a link to their policy stating that they can charge you back even after an item is shipped?

Paypal is super convenient and most people use it online. I love it.

I do not like it. We had a charge for about $2000 for some stuff off of fle-bay that was supposed to go to Pakistan. Fortunatly our credit union is on top of things and we got our money back before any thing bad happened. I dont like them at all, and the security is false security. I know several people who have had issues. My mom shipped some stuff from her website to a customer. The customer signed for the package, then claimed he didnt get them. He then reversed charges on her, and paypal removed the money from her account even though she had delivery comformation. Be cautious with Paypal.

After skimming through articles like this click (http://attrition.org/~squido/paypal/) I'd be careful on any crazy transactions where there might be shipping or overseas issues. Make sure they have a verified address and arrangements are previously made.

EBAY NOW OWNS paypal!!!   It's just another monopoly! GREED! That's what it's all about, GREED. Use money orders people!  It's getting where Ebay will only let you use paypal! When you buy, it's ok I guess. When you sell, you pay PAYPAL even more! PLUS your EBAY FEES & COMMISSION!

Chris,  I haven't bought anything from you as of yet.  I use PayPal exclusively to weed out the scams when doing business on the net, but I am not a business.  Being a business is different and if you take credit cards instead, I don't see what the problem would be to avoid the PayPal fees by dropping that form of payment that you accept.  PayPal is fast and if it is an impulse purchase that is where keeping it might be beneficial.  Most my stuff I sell is on Craigslist as well as other forums and the occasional ebay sale.  I know unless I REALLY want something on line from Ebay I only use PayPal.  US Postal Money orders work but cost + the trip.  My $.02.. No one should question your decision because of the cost of taking PayPal

Personally, I wouldn't accept credit cards period if possible.  I use to have a business many moons ago...and got shafted so many times by the cc companies (banks).  If the bank doesn't shaft you, the third-party processor will.  Basically, when you make a mistake...you eat it...when they make a mistake...you eat it.  I use paypal periodically...mostly only on ebay.  I too personally prefer money orders...as I don't like banks and all their high fees.  And wait until someone does a chargeback...you can feel your pocket emptying with fees.

Personally, I'd rather have low prices and pay with a money order.  Most people don't realize their products would be cheaper without credit cards...and I'm not just talking about the high interest rate their paying at their end.  The seller has to add their cc cost into the product...ie why cash discounts exist.  Without credit cards, prices should be lower by default.  At any rate...just need to get off my high horse now :)

I only have a paypal account because there are things I want I can only buy WITH paypal. Otherwise I'd ditch it in a big hurry.  I havent had problems lately, but when problems hit they hit big time.  I just don't like paypal.  I like CC's better.  I don't send money orders either, on the net I want it paid and sent to me fast, can't wait on mailing a MO, yeah I'm impatient.. ;D

I voted yes, simply because I use it all of the time.  I use it for the added buyer protections, but that is for purchases from outfits I have never used before.  I actually use PP for credit card purchases... go figure  ???

I would just as soon use a CC for anything here, even though I haven't ordered yet.  Give me a chance to get back from this Iraq deployment to get started on the truck!

Postal money orders almost cost a dollar, then there is the time to have to go and rush and get it, then the postage.  Not to mention the time.  So then there is a want to have it sent priority...  You add the costs.
Yeah. United states Postal Service has money orders.  I don't believe that the Post Office is going to go out of business, nor do I perceive any problems with cashing one of their money orders.  If Pay Pal charges, add on that minor amount of a dollar or two for convenience to the customer.   If not, then prepare to wait for the letter with the money order in it.  Today is wednesday, If I have the time to make it to the Post Office on Saturday, you would receive the money order by next Friday.  (If I were toh ave to do that,)
Up to you.

Well, I've had problems with PayPal in the past but nothing major. And I think it's pretty darn conveneint, like someone said, about buying stuff online at 3AM not having to fumble with CCard numbers, whatever. There's always that possibility of that one sale in the middle on the nite and if some customers are inconvenienced in the least, they'll just skip it and you got NO SALE.

Anyway, I'd say keep it Chris, unless the scammers are getting the better of your profits or the fees are being jacked up. Best O' Luck!

I like Paypal and use it regularly.  I understand the fees associated with using Paypal but just consider them into the cost of doing business.  There are some businesses I would rather use Paypal with then offer up a credit card number.
