Title: Emissions Question

I live in NC and I'm not sure about what performance mods are "emissions legal".  I have an '86 305.

Am I correct that you cannot change the type carburetor?  Can you change the intake?

What about exhausts?  If you put headers, cats and mufflers on it, is that legal?

From all the reading I've done and the advice I've received, the best things I can do to my 305 is to change the exhaust, intake and possibly the heads.  I don't want to do all that and then learn that I can't get an inspection sticker.

It depends on what the current emmissions requirements are in your area.  Check with the DMV.

Do they do an underhood inspection or just a tailpipe test?

Actually, they don't do a tailpipe test on vehicles older than '96.  They do a visual inspection.  I understand there is the potential of a huge fine if you tamper with the emissions equipment, however.  I'm not aware of anyone that has ever been dinged.

Again Check with your DMV to find out how strict they are....  Most States won't care about an Aftermarket Intake/Exhaust Swap, so long as the parts have a CARB Approve Sticker/Number Cast/Tag Welded on it, but will have a field-day tagging you for that as well, if you have tampered with any of the Emissions Equiptment(Ie Removed,Plugged,or even accidentally forgot to reconnect it :o).....
