Title: anyone using long tubes on lowered 73-87
Post by: DENNY383SWB on January 22, 2009, 08:53:32 pm
hey guys, great info here i have to start bythankin everyone for the invaluable info here! i hae a 83 swb its been dropped 5/6" and im in the process of installing a 505hp 383 thats been built with all forged internals, hyd/flat cam, rhs pro topline alum heads with a performance products rpm style intake and a 3" exhaust w h pipe & flowmaster delta 40. this truck will see regular trips to the strip but is intended as a nasty street truck. im lookin to see if anyone out there is using any long tube headers with a simular drop as me?ive been told that i could lose as much as 50hp from goin away from 1 3/4 long tubes to 1. 5/8 shorties both with 3" collectors? whats anyones opinion of this? if anyone's using longs what brand are they and how low below the frame do thy hang? i have a set of hedman elite longs on my 77 motorhome 454  and thte hang down considerably. anyhoo i understand that with any mod there are trade offs and im not too pickey im just looking for a long tube with the most ground clearance??? :-\  anyone seen these dougs headers pn d310 1 5/8 longs on jegs or summit?any info or opinions will be greatly apreciated.

im not lowered 5/6 but 3/4.
with my 3/4 and long tubes i scrape sometimes but only when its a bad bump or dip.
probably be a bit too close with a 5/6
look around in the forum.
from what u have id say find a set of 3/4 length chevelle Headers.
think ive seen em listed with 1 3/4 primary's.

I have them on my big block and it scraped a few times going fast hitting hard bumps. After I got a few road rashes on them I had them recoated so they sorta self clearanced themselves  ;D

Here's what I have

I have a 6/7 drop and I am running the long tube headman headers. I haven't had any problems they have rubbed twice and that was pulling off the asphalt into a field for a car show.

None of the longtubes I have ever used that were for a SBC 73-87 truck worked.  They all pointed to the ground when installed.  I stopped running SBC's so I don't have any info on longtubes, but you may try a Camaro set or Chevelle.
