Title: transmission went out and need a word of advice
Post by: Thowell on January 29, 2009, 09:47:06 pm
so if you guys dont know i have a 1987 R10 chevy shortbed 2wd efi. my 700r4 went out a couple of days ago after i had changed it. and by the way it was BROWN and burnt like heck; and i have been told not to change it if its burnt and slipping. but i did it any way. and so a day later after driving on the new trans oil it goes out completely. so... i am searching for a tranny and i have found a good rebuilt turbo 400 long tail out of a 2wd 1984 shortbed. but my tranny mechanic says it wont bolt in. but the guy who rebuilt the turbo 400 says it will bolt right up. and so i just need some advice from you guys who have been there and done that. so far i have been told that the turbo 350 and 400 will fit but i have to buy a shorter drive shaft to put in a new rebuilt turbo 350. and they told me they would pull mine out and rebuild a 350 and put it in for 800$. thanks for reading and gimme some good advice  :D

Here's some info, mainly the sites about swapping a 700r4 in place of a th400, but its still relevant, good info especially the measurments and mounting info.

TH400 (long) will require a shorter driveshaft and the transmission mount will need to be moved back.
TH350 (truck - 9") will bolt in not need a driveshaft change, but the transmission mount will need to be moved.  I just went from TH350 to 700R4.

If it were mine, I would rebuild the 700R4.

Agreed. Fix the 700R4 or buy another one.

thanks for the advice. and right after i posted this i realized i shouldve put it under the drivetrain tab not this one. but o'well. you guys say the 700 r4 but all ive heard is bad things about it. ive been told its just a bad transmission and that its just not as strong of a tranny. but ill take your guys advice because you are all enthusiasts. ill post a new one under the right tab when i get my 700 r4 rebuilt.

It was the early 700R4s that were a piece of crap. Once rebuilt with upgrades they were good too. The later ones GM had pretty much worked all the bugs out of. I would imagine it anyone would be hard press to find one still running that hasn't been rebuilt by now. I would rebuild the 700R4 too. They can be modified mild to wild depending on your application.

The 82-87's had issues and the 82-85 versions I believe can't take all the upgrades from the new one (4L60E parts still work in 700's)  88-93 versions have all the normal updates that made them reliable.  They can be built to handle about 600ft/lbs of torque, so you are safe.
