Title: Is it safe to weld on the frame?
Post by: team39763 on January 30, 2009, 04:40:45 pm
I know you can weld on the frame, but I was just wondering if I need to disconnect the battery or ground cable or remove anything that's grounded to the frame.  I may be getting some work done to my frame and I read somewhere that things can get fried if they're grounded to the frame during welding.  I'm not sure how true it is, but I just wanted to make sure.

Yes, pull the negative battery cable off. Any module is subject to a hit.

Also make sure you place your ground lead as close to your work as possible. I have replaced many ecm's on industrial engines because a welder was to lazy to roll his ground cable out another 10 foot. Just an added measure of safety.

I think I'll disconnect the ignition controller before I leave the truck there with him aswell as disconnect the ground cable.
