Title: Anyone try a B&M 700R4 converter lockup control?
Post by: nico on February 06, 2009, 07:48:10 pm
I am really considering swapping my 84's Turbo 400 for the 700R4 I recently traded for, and am researching different methods for controlling the lockup converter.  I have not seen a lot of good information on kits using vacuum to regulate the lockup, especially for vehicles with large camshafts.

Has anyone seen or used the B&M 70244 Converter Lockup Controller?  The kit includes a mechanical box that reads the speedometer cable speed (basically vehicle speed) and a control box to mount inside the cab. The control box allows the user to manually lockup the converter or have it automatically engage and disengage at adjustable speeds ranging from 30 to 90 mph (knob adjustment).  The system also includes an LED indicator for when the converter is in lockup mode as well as a manual override (similar to tow/haul mode in later model vehicles).  It seems like a very neat system that would not be dependent on my engine's lack of vacuum, but I have not heard of many people using it. I also am unclear on braking with the system, when the vehicle speed slowed below the custom setting, it would unlock, but I don't believe there is a brake switch for panic stop situations.

I believe this system would be good for my application (not a daily driver), allowing the converter to lockup at speeds over 60 mph, but being relatively invisible at lower speeds...

Any suggestions?

I haven't used that controller, but check around the places you'll get your 700r4 from or where you'll get it built at.  There is a way to set it up (700r4's) where it doesn't need any electronics, it can control the lockup itself.  I've been lookin around for that swap for my truck and several trans sellers say their trans don't need any controller and feature lockup above 55-60 mph.

I hooked up a toggle switch on my TA it was like an extra gear. In fact you can lock up the converter at any speed and in any gear that way as well. No harm if you forget to unlock it either just feels like running a standard in to high of a gear. Unlock it for racing and lock it for cruising down the highway.

There are many ways to do this. I put a few different methods into one schematic depending on what you want it to do. You can have it lock up in 3rd and 4th gear if you want. You'll have to figure out what you want it to do then either piece it together yourself or buy a premade set-up.

Thanks Vile!  I missed that thread somehow.  I really like the microswitch idea.
