Title: 1979 K20
Post by: 79K20 on February 10, 2009, 11:26:24 am
Just joined this group, thought I would post some pics of my truck.

Bought it from the second owner, an older gentlemen who literally drove it to church with his wife 3 times a week for the last 10 years. It has been very well cared for, the guy was in tears as I drove it away. I felt a little bad, but I'm really excited to start working on it and fixing it up. Its a '79 Scottsdale K20 Camper Special. It has a 350 4-barrel, SM465 4-speed trans, NP205 T-case, 14FF rear and 10-bolt front.  80k original miles, original Cardinal Red paint and cloth seat, and the factory R12 A/C blows colder than my other daily driver!

I have always loved these trucks, my dad had one when I was a kid and I have many fond memories from that old thing. Looking forward to creating some fond memories with my own son in this truck as I rebuild it and fix it up. Here are some pics from when I bought the truck:

Welcome from Texas.  Nice low mileage truck.  What are your plans for it?

Thanks for the compliments.

I'm not sure what the wheels are, to be honest. They look like Eagle 589s, but they could just be a cheap repro. They're 16x8's and the tires are 285-75-16's. The owner also gave me a matching spare, in addition to the 5 original 16.5-inch steel wheels with bias plies and mint hubcaps. Not sure what I am going to do with those...

Yeah, I have always been a sucker for the white tops, too, and it looks great with the red/orange body color. My father-in-law has a mint '72 Blazer with the same color combo; the two trucks looks SWEET next to eachother!

No big plans as of right now, other than getting all the cobwebs blown out of it and getting it back on the road. The previous owner hasn't driven it much (at all) in nearly 3 years, so it took a little work to get it up and running again.  Old gas in the tanks + strict Colorado emissions = Three attempts to get it to pass and get it registered. Phew.

Right now I am working on adjusting the clutch, and putting some front brakes on it this weekend.  Get this, my buddy (who owns a brake shop) saw the pads/rotors and informed me that they are ORIGINAL. Apparently he could tell from the castings on the rotor. Pretty crazy. Needless to say, it could stand to have some new binders put on it.

Also, I need to adjust the carb because it hesitates slightly in low RPMs, even after draining the old fuel. Anybody have a how-to for these old carbs? I suspect its a Q-jet, but not sure how to tell. I've owned a bunch of Holleys and an Edelbrock, but never a Q-jet... I guess it will be a learning experience.

Thanks for all the feedback already, I'm stoked about this group!

Where in CO are you? I'm here in cold Aurora. I have a 1/2 ton twin of your truck, only mine lacks the white top.

Whats up Prong. I am in Arvada, not too far from you.

Get ready for some snow... Forecast is calling for several more inches tomorrow!
