Title: My 1979 K20/30, 1973 Cheyenne Super 10, 1978 K20 Crewcab
Post by: 79K30_89C7000 on February 12, 2009, 09:31:34 pm
I am from central Missouri. I've always owned 73-87 Chevy trucks. My first vehcile was a 1978 C20 with a 350. I have owned several since. I bought a 1979 K20 when I was 17 and still own it and drive it almost daily. In 2006 I converted it to a dual wheel with a Dana 60 swap in front and a Dana 70HD in rear. I also rebuilt the engine and all driveline at the time. I recently as in today bought a 1973 Chevy Cheyenne Super 10 with 59,000 original miles and a 454. I'm going to sell my 05 GMC and make the 73 my daily driver and keep it nice.

My Brothers 1978 K20 Crewcab. I gave this truck to him last winter. He has since bought an almost rust free cab for it and is in the process of getting it ready to put on it.

All awesome trucks. I prefer the 73 myself. It is in amazing shape. Looks like the factory buckets, are they factory?

I think the bucket seats are original but I am not a fan of bucket seats and they are going to come out and a good bench seat is going in. I've got some things to do to the 73 as time and money allows. I want to fix all of the small rust spots this summer. I'm also going to install headers and dual exhaust, get rid of the smog pump, take off the rumming boards, and put some aluminum wheels on it with a little fatter tire to fill up the fender wells. I am also going to convert the dually back to single wheel this summer. I'm going to turn the flatbed into a trailer for my welding equipment.

My old truck started out life as a 1979 K20 with a 350 and 4 speed. Back in the fall of 2006 I rebuilt the engine, transmission, and transfer case. I also swapped in a Dana 60 and Dana 70HD from a donor 1978 K30 dually. I built a nice big flatbed to hold all of my tools and welding equipment. Well, the ole truck eventually ended up weighing 9000lbs. That sure made it hard for it to serve its second purpose as a daily driver too. Not to mention it was going to need 6 new tires next summer if it remained a dually. I decided to convert it back to single again. I bought 2 new single wheel hubs for the front Dana 60 and put my regular bed back on it and some 35x12.50 Super Swampers and aluminum wheels I had. I also turned my bed into a trailer for all my equipment. Now my truck handles better, drives better, and doesn't burn as much gas. I should have built the trailer in the first place. I've had the truck done for a month now and have already put 3000 miles on it. Makes it alot more enjoyable to drive.

Where did you get the hubs?

Did you buy new GM hubs?

When we rebuilt the front end on my son's '79 D60 we bought new GM hubs at the Chevy parts counter. $350.00 for the pair IIRC.

what size lift do you have and how do you get your tires to stick out of the wheel well like that?  i have 35 in tires too but they kinda tuck into the wheel well.  i also have a 4 in lift and yours seems to sit lower down on the tires.  the stance on your truck is awesome

I ordered the hubs from GM Parts Direct. They are brand new GM.

I've got a Pro Comp 2 1/2" lift on it. The reason the wheels stick out so far is because the rear end is the Dana 70HD dually rearend. It is wider than any of the 14 bolts. When I was running duals I had 2 inch spacers between them. When I went back to singles I put them on the front axle so the width matched the rear axle. I had to "adjust" my front fender opening with the spacers on the front.

so a 2 1/2 in lift is enough to clear 35 in tires?  i looked around these forums and seemed that everyone was saying you had to have at least a 4 in lift to fit 35's.  anyway your truck is cool lookin

1 Ton trucks sit higher than 1/2 ton trucks.
