Title: Gears.
Post by: The dream on February 17, 2009, 08:31:36 pm
Hey guys, I have stock gears on my 78 3/4 ton 4x4. Its set up with 33' tires on 16.5 rims, it feels kinda sluggish, I would want it to be faster. Is this a tire size that needs other gears to go faster? or should I look at another thing? ???

I would look into upgrading engine performance. The rearend should be 3:73's at least. May double check that tho. If you have a 350 in your truck, then it probably doesnt have more than 175 hp at best (I really think they were only 165hp, but not sure. I dont have my book handy) Even the 454 was barely 215hp .Another thing you need to take into consideration, is the weight of the truck. We have 540 hp in our 81 3/4 ton, and it moves pretty good, but at 6500 pounds, the same motor in a halfton would be a rocket.

Find out for sure what the gear ratio is. I would say 3.73 or 4.11's would be nice especially if you have a 700R4
