What kind of paint was original on my '86? Acryllic lacquer or acryllic enamel? The owner's manual is of no help on this.

acryllic enamel is what my '78 had. unless it's base coat-clear coat which should be acrylic urethane, I'm pretty sure.

One sure way, take a rag and put a little bit of lacquer thinner on it, go to a small area and rub it if the paint comes off its lacquer if not its enamel. My 85 cab had lacquer on it but it was repainted before so i couldnt tell you but try that rag thing and it should tell you.
thanks

Agreed with stepside. They did uses lacquer for a while but it a crap shoot. Another way to tell is if it sands like iron, its probably lacquer.

would be acrylic enamel ... I dont think they ever used laquer on a truck but could have been painted before

It appears to be acryllic enamel. Thanks.
