4.3L has different mounting perches than the V-8 but everything else should work. The numbers on the back are casting numbers which will give you a general idea but the numbers that will tell the story is on the passenger side block behind the alternator. I am doing the same swap in my 86 but mine is a 2WD.
-
so what do i do about the perches ???
-
You will need to get a set from a 4 WD that had a V-8.
http://www.nastyz28.com/chevy-engine-code-stampings.php should tell you about what exactly the application of your engine
-
ok now by perches you mean motor mounts ? im not shure if the motor came out of a 4x4 or 2x4 do i need the (perches ) from a 75 truck ? or what im sorrry for all the questions but now im lost ???
-
http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=6143.30 has pictures of what I am talking about on the 2 WD frame.
-
Right by the valve cover on the passenger side in the front will be a series of numbers which will classify your motor.
Position #4:

Can use this too:

It doesn't matter what the motor came out of. All SBCs are the same.
You just need the engine mounts for a V8 instead of a 4.3L. Any 4x4 will work.
-
ok cap bear with me now are you talking about the mounts on the motor right ? i have mounts on the 350 and the 4.3 what exactaly do i need to do to install the 350 in my 85 4x4 what is these perches ? what is a sbc ?? im sorry im yanking my 4.3 out this weekend and would like to put my 350 in, so sorry 4 all the questions but iv got people coming to help me ind i d like to be prepared be for thay get hear
-
SBC = Small Block Chevy
The V8 engine and frame mounts are different than a V6 as far as I know. You only need these to install a V8, the stands will be universal.
You need the engine mount and its corresponding frame stand mount to bolt it in. Should be available from NAPA or any good parts store (or salvage yard)
-
so i can buy the frame part of the mount from nappa thanks is thare a name for that or if i just say frame mount thatwoll know what i mean
-
I would call it the frame mount.
-
ok thanks i calld them and thay had two in stock and thay are like 10 bucks a pece so its all ready to go i guess, i just hope the tranny mounts up it should right ?????
-
You won't have to move the tranny at all.
-
Hey good luck with your swap out bro, I pulled my 350 out last thursday, and I am still working on my truck. I had alot more to do then just swap the motors, though. I had to pull exhaust pipes on a 3+3 King Cab, long bed, 4x for my truck.
Anyways hope you get everything buttoned up easily enough.
-
ya thanks i got to get the manifolds off anther truck in a junk yard it has a 350 2 but hopefully ill get it butend up yhis weekend
-
The 4.3 you had was basically a 350 with 2 middle cylinders eliminated. So with that being said it stands to reason everything on the front of the motor will swap right over and the tranny and starter are the same basically. I would have to believe the motor mounts are the same as well. I did a swap from a 6 banger a few years back on a firebird that had a 2.8 and still had the same mounts just had to bolt into different holes on the frame. Unlike the 4.3 that motor shares nothing with the 350 so I had to get a new tranny, exhaust, radiator and front springs. However all the electrical hooked right up like the oil sensor and temp. Keep an eye on your front end for sag from the extra weight. Your carb will work but you will need a new intake that is a 4 barrel or you could get an adapter plate but those are more problems than they are worth. Since the 4.3 and the 350 share the same bore and stroke the carb should work fine without any mods. I think you are going to run into some clearance issues up front since the 350 is longer but I don't think those will be too hard to overcome. For instance you might have to swap from a clutch fan to a flex fan with the correct size spacer and you may need to trim the fan shroud a bit too. Don't forget you will need and 8 cylinder distributor if it didn't come with the motor.
-
kool thanks a mill guys so i guess i just need to buy frame mounts and get that puppy bolted up huh ??? ;D ??? ;D
-
The fan shroud will be an issue, but the motor mounts are different AFAIK. They were different on another members truck when they switched to a V8.
-
just picked up a shroud ang got the frame mounts ready to pick up at nappa im geting excited ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D
-
ok motor mounts are a big issiue what do i do now i need to get this swap done saap and get the truck out of the shop
-
The motor mount locations are different. The mounts need to be moved. I'll see if I can find a pic of the location for ya.

Look through http://forum.73-87chevytrucks.com/smforum/index.php?topic=11311.0;topicseen There is a picture of a 4x4 with the engine removed to see what you need.
-
I'm not following you here. Just put the V8 mouts in the proper holes.

ok guys im not trying to be a paine but im takinh a v6 out of my 1985 gmc 4x4 so from the end of the block to the motor mount its 10 " on the v8 350 its 14 inches from the end of th block to the motor mount with that being said i have a crosmember siting fight ight in front of the "frame" mount so im guessing thay made a frame mount for the v6 an a diferent one for the v8 or do i have to fab a new one 4 my truck ? or drill the rivits to the crosmember and move it cuz that is whats in my way i figuerd that this woul b a straght foward swap but im dead wrong i cant slide my tranny back its agenst the fire wall and its a manual ..... the v6 frame mounts will not slide foward the crossmember is in the way ( an by the way when i say frame mount im talkinf bout the bracket that bolts to the frame not the motor mounts)
-
Post a close up of each side.
-
I seen several v6 to v8 swaps done. None had a special frame, so like ccz145a said, we need pics. The v6 is just a v8 with the fromt 2 cylinders cut off. It will be longer, so I dont understand you measurements as being a problem. You should just be able to bolt the mounts to the frame, the clamshell mounts to the engine, and drop it in. Give us some pics so we can see what you see.
-
ok ill try but me and the old lady split and it was her camra and the only thing i got was my truck and tools so my truck is an hour away siting at dads but ill get picks this weekend and have them posted by sunday night thanks any but let me get this sraght........ ill just put the motor block mount.... put it on the block take the other part of the mount and bolt it to the frame mount and thats it no moving or cutin ???? thanks
-
You shouldnt have to cut anything. The guys I have seen do this couldnt fabricate a flat plate. We just need some ics, who knows, you may have something way out of the norm. You should just be able to bolt the rubber mount to the frame and the clamshell to the engine and drop it in.
-
I don't know why you are having a hard time with this. Definitely add pix when you can. I took some pix of my mounts today for you but haven't had a chance to put them up yet since I just got in from working on my 74 all night (again). I'll try to post pix tomorrow

-
I don't know why ??? I've done plenty of V8 conversions and never had to change anything other than the motor mount position.
-
ok boys iv got the swap done i had to take the frame mounts out of a 87 chevy and take my crossmembers lil brackets off and out of the way the 87 frame mounts bolted right up to the crossmember and had the 350 siting in thare bout a hour later i had quit for the night then had it runing sat morning thanks 4 all the help really thanks

Woohoo! Fun wasn't it? Congrats. :)
-
Did you take pix of the differences?
-
no man srry like i said yhe ol lady took her cam and i dident have enugh light to make my phone work right srry
-
I haven't ever had swap issue either other than just moving the mount around. I would really like to see comparison pics, but...
-
I'll post pics on my V-6 to V-8 swap on my 2 wheel drive if you are interested.
-
Did you have the same issues? I think your pics are already here...
-
he shuldent have ran into the same probs 2x4 an 4x4 are way difrent but i could defently c where he would have trouble like i said i bought new motor mounts and robd the frame mounts off another truck . the cross members are riveted in but all you need to do is take off the suport bracket (just unbolt) and the frame mount bolts right in to the cross member its so easey but i could have pulld my hair out till i had it figured out ;D ;D ;D
-
So easy a caveman can do it. ;)
I couldn't resist.

I posted pics with the engines in place. I actually haven't plucked the V-6 out. I finally garaged it on Sunday so I am closer than I have ever been...
