Title: 1981 GMC Stepside
Post by: tealm0nsta on March 07, 2009, 01:47:17 am
Stumbled across this site and thought I'd share my last project. I'm on the hunt for an S10 now that will probably be built along the same lines as this one.

Just your basic repaint and tune up...

Thats a really great looking truck! 8)

I was wondering the same thing? I went the other way from a s-10 to a 84 stepside.

Well, your "basic" repaint and tune up looks fantastic!  That's a really cool truck bro!

Nice truck. I went from a 73' LWB to my 77' stepper to a 2000 Sonoma and back to the 77'. I'd like to have an S series again. With an LS motor of course  :P

Thanks guys.

I've always liked the lowered trucks and really want to do a pro-touring style s10 w/ truck arm suspension. See if I can use the lightweight to my advantage and make a corner carver that will run 10's.

The step side has been around for a while, took 2nd at Super Chevy Show Houston a few years ago and a few other awards at local shows. I came here hoping to find it again. I sold it a while back and its traded hands a few times. I was hoping if I posted it up someone would come forward saying they've seen it recently and hopefully put me in contact w/ the current owner.

I'd stick with the stepside, it's a keeper.  Get a 3rd gen F-body or C4 'Vette for a good handling build car.  Making a truck handle (though possible) seems like a lot of wasted effort that would be better spent on a sports car platform.  You know, it's kinda like making a Honda Civic fast (it can be done, but why not start with a car that is already fast and make it faster for more satisfaction and less total investment/hassle).

lol i had a 13 second civic Si...I've got a mustang gt right now(and i've had 2 3rd gen Fbodies and too many 4th gens to count) and a colorado w/ zq8 suspension. Just something about throwing a truck into a turn and having the confidence that its not going to come around on you that makes it really fun.

Why not throw some suspension mods at the stepside, then?  How about one of these (http://www.porterbuiltstreetrods.com/products.php) front ends and a HTH (http://www.hotrodstohell.net/) truck arm suspension in the rear for improved handling, a US Body fiberglass front clip, and an all-aluminum LS motor to make it nice and light.....  LOL, I'm not trying to badger you.  I just really like the stance and look of your current truck.  I know it would be hard for me to part with it.

I just now saw where you said you sold the stepside in a previous post.   :-[

LOL.  So I guess you'd have a little trouble modifying it now.  Maybe I should read a little more carefully before going off on a tangent.

At any rate, you did a really nice job on it and I'm sure any future project you undertake will turn out just as nice.  Good luck tracking it down.

The air cleaner base is from a big block 69 vette. there are other similar ones out there but that one was the nicest w/ the best flowing base. i had the k&n lid and filter on it.
The horns were a little higher pitched but not mickey mouse sounding, they were on the truck when i bought it so they lasted somewhere around 15+ years.
since i like to talk about the truck and people have questions here's some that come up sometimes. I retained the stock v belt for all accessories w/ mild mods to each bracket due to headers, intake, etc, the valve covers were the smooth billet style back before everyone sold them on ebay. the truck was originally a 250 straight 6 w/ th350 and 2.7x 12 bolt rear. The rear gave out around 200,000 miles and the trans was holding up great but I got the 700r4 on a whim and that was an easy install w/ stock length driveshaft, stock crossmember moved back a little. The truck made enough power to light the tires up from a 40 roll on street tires, which was always fun when you're next to someone thats wanting to run at the next light.

Before I sold it I had started researching a C4(84-96) vette IRS swap w/ the possibility of doing the front as well. Its actually pretty straight forward and would have let me put the truck even more on the ground w/o loosing ride quality. however the long tubes were about 3" from the pavement.

I posted here to see whats going on in the truck world since i've been neglecting the scene lately and really hoping to come across the truck so i can finish it, everything has a price, etc. hopefully if i do find it its not mangled or hacked up.

again, thanks for the kind words and for letting me check out some of your rides too, some really killer set ups on here.
