Title: Identification of a part
Post by: harrishawk on March 07, 2009, 11:08:18 am
This is attached to my distributor (?) near the back of the engine on the left side of the air cleaner. It has a hose that attaches to it that has rotted into. The truck is an 84 Silverado 8 cyl and runs okay. Just need to know if I need to replace the hose. Thanks

Harrris, That is the vacuum advance canister, it varies the ignition timing based on engine "load", yes you would want to replace the hose, the other end will go to the carburetor. Lorne

Make sure the end on the carb only has vacuum when the accelerator is cracked. No vacuum when at idle.

Got it fixed!  Y'all are saving me alot of money.  Thanks, so much.

Okay, here is another one - if you don't mind.

This piece looks like it has been disconnected for awhile.  Very rusted.

I'm thinking that tubing was originally hooked into a heat riser valve that was installed in the exhaust manifold, where the flex hose, or stove pipe, is. The heated air was used somewhere else- wherever that tubing goes to. Does it go down to the oil pan?

If you can get us a pic of what it goes to, the other end.  could either be a heat riser like DnStClr said or may goto the transmission modulator.?

There was a about a 6 inch piece of tubing that was laying on the ground underneath.  It fits the end of the metal piece - but I've looked for a connection point and can't find one.

Look where the exhaust manifold meets the exhaust pipe.  is there anything in between the two that the tube might goto?  if not I don't know what it's for.
