Title: 1985 K5 Blazer: Added another one to the stable
Post by: Captkaos on March 09, 2009, 11:09:04 pm
I picked up a 1985 Chevy K5 4x4 Blazer this weeked. The paint job was not a key selling point, but I did get a 87 Donor with running 350TBI/700R4. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_Camo.jpg)

Suhweet! I like it.
Someone might draw a bead on you driving on 20th street, though. ;D
You going to turn it into a convertable?

I got 2 trucks that will run for $1800. The other one is a northern rust bucket but it will run. I could push the body off the frame. Plans are to fix the spongy brakes and probably rebuild or replace the carb immediately.
Plans are to convert it to a fulltop with a new window frame and fulltop I am getting. I am also really wanting to get a 6.2L Diesel to convert it.

Got back on this during Thanksgiving vacation after a long hiatus
Friday, Nov 26th, 2010:Started pulling parts to get the 350 out, pulled the A/C, Power Steering, wiring, hoses and radiator. Saturday, Nov 27th, 2010:removed the exhaust, trans inspection plate, braces, and t-case brace and torque converter bolts. Sunday, Nov 28th, 2010:Supported the trans, disconnected the supply/return fuel hoses, pulled out the hoist and found it wouldn't go up high enough, so I pulled the valve cores out to get the motor free. As of last night the 350 is out. Monday, Nov 29th, 2010:Sourcing a new converter, 12V starter so I can drop the 6.2L in. Hope to get it cleaned up and see if it needs new gaskets this week/weekend.

Sunday, Jan 30th, 2011: Got the 6.2L dropped back in the truck yesterday evening. Still have top 2 bolts in the Trans to bolt up, along with starter.
Anyone got some tips on retro-ing the wiring harness on this thing. I actually have most of the donor wiring harness but if anyone has done this before I would love some feedback. I hate wiring...

Also purchased a drivers side Battery box sometime this summer from GM.

Oct 22, 2011: Sometime in the past I put the starter on but neglected putting the engine bolts on. So today I pulled the started BACK off and put the bolts in and then put the starter back on.
I also pulled the Gasser harness out and I am currently verifying that the CUCV harness I got from the 6.2L donor will work with the the 1985 harness. I still need to remove the 24V circuits, but hopefully I can make what I have work with little modifications. So far it looks ok, but I really would like a Civilian harness diagram to compare what I have to.
CUCV on the top above broom handle, Gas below... (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/CUCV_Gas.jpg)
In addition I started figuring out how the AC hooks up. I found how the Brackets Vile sent work, but it appears I need another bracket that goes to the front of the head as mine has the povision for the second alternator. Anyone have pics on this? Vile, do you happen to have the other bracket?
I am confident that the wide bracket bolts to the intake on the 2 studs pictured, and the lower bracket got to the exhaust, but the front I don't have.

Based on your scan and this picture of the front of mine it looks like I am missing the lower piece that bolts to the head, the 2 rear ones are in the previous pics mounted to the compressor, and can be seen here also.
This is one picture I found from IH8Mud, it looks different than what you posted. I know there is 2 versions, 84 - down and 85-up, I think what I have is what comes up when you google 911025TG09-090.gif, which is the one shown below from IH8Mud
See if this works: http://www.google.com/imgres?q=6.2L+diesel+AC+bracket&um=1&hl=en&safe=off&biw=1024&bih=673&tbm=isch&tbnid=xA5yXCLaQN_VVM:&imgrefurl=http://www.dieselplace.com/forum/showthread.php%3Fp%3D4309825&docid=X4FSnQ7K0h3QyM&itg=1&imgurl=http://www.compnine.com/largeimg/911025TG09-090.gif&w=900&h=554&ei=d4usTpj0OZSztwemuqXeDg&zoom=1&iact=rc&dur=463&sig=108019092267060197944&page=1&tbnh=134&tbnw=217&start=0&ndsp=12&ved=1t:429,r:5,s:0&tx=50&ty=82

Any particular reason why to go with a 6.2l vs gas? Is there more power or is it just to have the diesel?

i took a look at the AC brackets and everything is all together can't even get a good pic
looks like your truck came with A4 compressor whats wrong with that set up
from the top the bracket looks like the same one
good luck JM hope this helped out

Diesel 4x4's can get up to 25mpg as opposed to 17mpg with a gasser.
Junkman. My Blazer came with a 350 that I pulled out, the Diesel I got for it came out of a M1008 Military truck, it never had AC. My truck originally came with a R4 compressor. Vile supplied the A4 Compressor and brackets.
The images I uploaded are from the internet, this is what I currently have as far as brackets. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/62L_installed1.jpg)

Sunday, Nov 6th, 2011: I got all of the wiring in the Diesel harness sorted out and removed what I didn't need from it; secondary Alternator, and assorted wiring, TH400 plug/wiring. Repaired the Temp sending from the Gasser harness, spliced the long side Alternator to the main circuit wire to match the gasser. Removed the Water in Fuel light harness from the bulkhead along with the grounding for the Wait Light.
Now I just need to loom it up with the Glow control wiring and mount the Glow relay and the Filter Assembly. AND find a throttle cable and figure out how the 700R4 TV connects and get that for it.

Nice build. I love 6.2's. My first truck was a 6.2 that my grandpa bought new so that kind of resonates with me. I currently have an 85 GMC k1500 Wrangler 6.2, and I was just going to throw it out there that if you need reference pics I'll take some of mine of whatever you need. Keep in mind that my truck has been farmer owned all it's life and needs a good restoration but it is at least as far as I know all there.

Junkman, The donor truck for mine was a Military truck, supposedly a 1985 truck, no idea as I didn't confirm. He pulled everything out of it. It was the early 82-84 version you have. I got the harness portion from Diesel Depot along with the new controller. I just need to wire it all in. 85 was the first year for the new updated controller and was used up until 1993.
jsetrum, Thanks for the offer, I will definitely remember if I need some reference pics.

Friday, Feb 3rd, 2012 The AC related parts finally showed up from Diesel Depot, thought I was going to get a lot better of a manifold for the pump, that would fit, but oh well...
Cleaned up the bracket and painted it to keep it from rusting (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/AC_A4Brkt.jpg)
Installed the remote fill Reservior on the Pump (18mm, flat screwdriver), put the new AC bracket on and installed the Power steering setup. The proceeded to put the old AC compressor on the truck. Still need to get studs for the lower mount that goes in the manifold but I have the potential to have AC now. (15mm, 13mm)
Still need to get a remote hose and finish putting the hydroboost in, but it is nice making some progress again...

Saturday, February 23rd, 2013: Mocked in the radiator and oil cooler lines, to make sure everything was working. Gathered all the other parts necessary (fan, hoses, clamps etc). Then it was time to make a decision on how to proceed with the bent radiator support on the drivers side. Remembered I had a spare at the shop so I proceeded to pull the headlight trim, headlight buckets, grille, turn signals and ran out of daylight.
Sunday, February 24th, 2013: Removed the horns, lower valence, inner support, hood latch, release cable, battery tray and AC condensor and ended up with this:
After loosening the 2 inner fender to cab bolts per side, removing the core support to fender bolts per side (breaking 2 weld in nuts), the 3 inner fender to core support bolts per side and the 2 frame bolts and loosening the upper fender to cowl bolts I had this:
I then retrieved the spare core support and found that I actually had 2, and one had the label for a 6.2L diesel on it, so I chose that one. Unfortunately it had some rust issues. So I decided to do it the hard way and cut out the spot welds from both the wreck core support and the rusted one, straighten out the wreck one and had the body guy who wanted to make a piece weld it in. Now I have a repaired core support.
Took everything home and still have to fix the inner fender that was bent on the Drivers side. Jacked up the truck, removed the tire and pulled the inner fender out of the truck. With a number of whacks with a hammer and re-installation I was able to get it to where I could bolt the inner fender to the core support once I got it back in. Ran out of daylight and had to put everything up without the core support. Hoping it doesn't get cold before I can get it back in.

Friday, March 1st, 2013: got a call that the 6.2L diesel trans lines were removed so I went and picked them up.
Also took a pic of the 6.2L label on the core support: (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_10.jpg)

Monday, March 4th, 2013: Got home a little early and decided since the threat of snow was gone and it was warm I would remove the trans lines and swap them out. That didn't last long as it appears I am going to have to lower the trans/transfer case (have to swap out the bent crossmember anyway) to get it out.. I hope.

Sunday, March 10th, 2013: Spent a couple hours with a 1/2" crows foot, a bent 1/2" line wrench and a stubby 1/2" wrench and finally got the transmission lines out without dropping the trans.. This is the difference between the gasser and diesel trans lines. The diesel crosses behind the oil pan to go to the drivers side into the radiator...
Reinstalled the core support. 1/2" socket, 3/8" drive. 5 bolts on the left, 5 on the right and 3 on the bottom to the inner fenders. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_14.jpg)
Reinstalled the lower Valence panel. 1/2" socket, 3/8" drive, 2 bolts to the fenders on either side and one in the middle. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_15.jpg)
Installed the AC condensor, 10mm socket for the upper isolators (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_18.jpg) (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_19.jpg)
Dropped in the new Diesel specific Radiator (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_20.jpg)
Installed the Oil cooler lines that cross over the radiator specific to the Diesel and then hooked up the Transmission lines. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_21.jpg)
Put the fan shroud in place 1/2" socket with the 2 bolts at each upper bracket and then called it a night. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_22.jpg)

Sunday, March 17th, 2013: Started off pulling the Shroud, trans and oil cooler lines and radiator back out so I could mark and drill the new lower holes for the auxiliary Battery tray. You can see them both here: (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_23.jpg)
Then bolted the battery tray back in, MINUS the lower bolt as the inner fender needs some persuasion to meet up with it. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_24.jpg)
At this point I routed all of the front wiring harness back through and hooked up the grounds (note the rusted one in the above pic), snaked the hood latch cable back through, reinstalled the radiator, oil and trans cooler lines, fan shroud and then installed the fan. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_25.jpg) (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_26.jpg)

Sunday, May 5th, 2013: started looking at the wiring for the glow control and sorting out the mounting of the filter to the firewall. Removed some unnecessary pieces that went to the gas motor and mocked up where the holes would need to be drilled to put the filter in place. Started looking at the glow control and couldn't find the pigtail to the new controller. Finally found it Monday evening.
Wednesday, May 8th, 2013: Pulled the Diesel glow wiring out of the box and started sorting through it, removed the old controller wiring out of the loom and traced all the necessary connections, now I just need to get it all spliced back together to put it in the truck.

The only thing that happened to it over the summer was for me to move it from one spot in the driveway to another. Saturday, November 29th, 2014: spent some time prior to Thanksgiving going over the wiring diagrams and this day I pulled a section of the loom back off and spliced in the switched wire to the controller along with the hot wire to it. Sunday, November 30th, 2014: There was one more section of the harness which is basically a water in fuel inhibit switch apparently that interupts power if there is a presence of water in the filter. No idea on if I am right, but I identified and removed all of that wiring and will need to splice it into the current wiring in the fuse panel. At this point I only have the WAIT an Glow light power and ground and one more ground left and I will be done with this electrical nightmare.

Thursday, January 1st, 2015:Found that the prong on the positive cable was touching the S terminal of the solenoid. Moved it around and reconnected the battery. With everything hooked up the Water in fuel bulb came on and went of. However the Wait light stays on permanently. In addition, the truck won't start. Checked on the starting circuit and apparenty the starter relay isn't getting voltage. After playing with it I decided to bypass the relay and see if it would crank. While all of this was going on I drained the old oil out and found that the gasket was broken which is why it was constantly leaking.
With the relay bypassed the truck turned over. So I set out to pick up a replacement relay and a new drain gasket. I also bought 3 gallons of diesel.

Saturday, January 3rd, 2015: During the breaks of rain I went out to check the glow plugs and to see if there was any air in the fuel system. Went I got out there both batteries I hooked up on Thursday were dead and I had to put them on charge. While that was going on using a test light I hooked it to the positive battery and to each glow plug. All of them lit so they should be good. Moved to loosening the injection lines and cranking it to get fuel out. All but 2 were getting fuel, but the batterys weren't very charged so I ended up running them down during the checks. Left everything on charge and hopefully it will stop raining tomorrow to make some progress. During this time I put the replacement relay in place and with it there the truck won't crank, so it is still bypassed. I also have a big power steering leak that will need to be addressed before I can drive it.

Saturday, January 30th, 2015: Previously I had a power steering leak that appeared to be a hose, well it wasn't. I removed the pump from the truck on along with the AC and brackets. It was then that I found it was the reservoir on the pump. I reseated it and then attempted to make it seal. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_67.jpg)
Tuesday, February 3rd, 2015: with the tails on prior to removing the pump I took this quick video for sound:
Saturday, February 7th, 2015: I had put some power steering fluid in it and it sat the below position and nothing came out for a week. So I proceeded to bolt it back in. During this time I found the hoses leaking at the steering box and thought that is what was leaking on the ground. They were tightend and I wrestled the pump back in along with connecting the hoses. With the pump back in I refilled it and put the new belts on. Started it up and found this lovely little spot. It was late so I had no idea where this was coming from other than the suspect power steering box.
The next morning I cranked it again and discovered this wasn't power steering fluid, it was transmission fluid...

I was told it was mounted on a 81-87, but apparently they were not running the lower valance panel as it hit. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_78.jpg) (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_79.jpg)

Sunday, October 25th, 2015: Went to Lowes to get some 1/2" Grade 8 bolts to permanently mount the bumper, winch and Roller Fairlead to the truck. Also pulled the rear brakes to make sure I get the right size and ran by the parts store and picked up rotors, pads, shoes and drums. Next on the agenda is getting the brakes redone.

Friday, November 13th, 2015: After putting the new bumper on and setting the winch in place I found that the stance of the Blazer was lacking. I didn't want to go bigger than 33's but the front was WAY to low. There is 5" of different at the body line above the fenders front and back in the above picture. I didn't plan it this way but I called and ordered a BDS lift kit and ended up getting a 6" lift. Pictured is the front springs, box kit (bushings, u-bolts etc and 4 front shocks...) Saturday, November 14th, 2015: I was able to borrow a buddy of mines shop (and stayed way longer that I wanted) but with a few hurdles we got the front lift on. One spring would not seat in the axle locator. We ended up dropping it and drilling it to fit. The size different was huge and drilled a 17/32" hole for it to fit and ran out of time.
Sunday, November 15th, 2015: I spend the day getting the springs back in, the first set of shocks mounted and the Z linked connected and called it a day. With the 33's, this thing looks weird to me. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_86.jpg)

Tuesday, November 17th, 2015: Called my buddys 4x4 shop and told him to order the rear springs.
Monday, November 23rd, 2015:I spend a good amount of time trying to free the rear leaf from the truck. All I had was a Sawzall and got the inside bolt loose and got a call that the rear lift kit arrived and I went and picked them up, while I was there ordered some Wild Country MTX 35x12.50 Tires. I also got 2 6" cut off wheels.

Wednesday, November 25th, 2015: My buddy that owns the shop cut me out a plate for my winch to be mounted. While I got the rear spring bolts cut off the truck he took care of welding in the plate for the winch. I put the R10 Driver to work and drove to pick up the tires for the Wild Country MTX 35x12.50x15 tires. While they were mounted them for me I ran around trying to find replacement bolts for the springs.
Got the suspension on and the new tires and I had my buddy weld on the much needed exhaust hanger brackets on the truck and had to call it an early evening. (http://www.73-87chevytrucks.com/projects/BlazerK5/85K5_87.jpg)

Sunday, December 6th, 2015: Took the truck on its first voyage after the suspension and tire upgrade along with the new brakes to do a shakedown. Didn't get it up to speed yet but that steering needs to be recentered, again... Looking for a rear bumper to mount my spare MTX on. Hopefully I will be able to use this for the hunting season. Still need to get it tagged and insured.
i like it. wonder if it can be modified for more aerodynamics without cutting down on the cooling
You will never be able to make that bumper aerodynamic, it's the size of a moose lol. Let's being honest, being the first Gen trucks to be designed in a wind tunnel, they still have the aerodynamic properties of a house brick haha.

Lol I'm talking about putting something on those vertical brackets like sheet metal to give it and "edge" so it cuts the air instead of just ramming it

It has a diesel in it and 35's I don't think I could add to the aerodynamics any...

I don't know why as easy as I could make a new bumper for my truck I like the chrome stock one but even if it bigger on the bottom it might help

Just checking to get an update on this truck. Did you get it on the road? What are your thoughts on the 6.2 overall? After doing both a 6.2 & 5.3 swaps, what are your thoughts on each as far as the time, money, and driveability of them?. Just trying to get some ideas for 1 of my trucks. Thanks.

I got it driving, but it isn't a back up truck yet. I have the rear bumper and tire carrier at the powder coater right now. I have driven 6.2L before so as long as it runs like they did I am fine. I don't need a huge power motor I wanted a 4x4 with good gas mileage. So far I have driven it around the block a few times. It has some things that need to be fixed but I am sure I will be happy with it. I need to fix the floor pans on it before I can start driving it and replace the top seals.
Time and money the 6.2L was faster and cheaper, pull out the 350 drop the 6.2L in. All I needed was a torque converter and TV. The TV bracket is like hens teeth, almost impossible to find. any LS you put in in not going to be cheap. But if I pull a SBC out, an LS will go back in if I am to keep it. Driveability on the LS is like a new car. I have almost 30K on the LS swap and drive it everyday.
