Title: Oil Pump Shaft Retainer??
Post by: 76 3+3 on March 12, 2009, 01:24:10 am
Pulled oil pan off to replace rear main seal and Fel-pro provided an Oil Pump Shaft Retainer replacement. I can see this goes onto the oil pump shaft but I am not sure how to remove the old one. I am afraid I will break or damage the oil shaft. Any suggestions? This is on a Generation I Chevy 350 1975.

Is the old one metal or plastic? If it's metal...leave it alone, if it's plastic...it will likely be dry/brittle & break when you start to remove it. They just slide off, if it gives you trouble you could cut it lengthwise to release it. Lorne

Thanks for the info. I ended up pulling the shaft apart (shaft snaps together under plastic retainer) and then breaking the old plastic retainer off.

I would replace it with a steel sleeve shaft. they're only $10-15 bucks.

I will keep the metal sleeve in mind next go around. I got the new plastic one on and rear seal/pan are back on. Thanks the info.
