Title: beter brakes
Post by: heyharris1 on March 23, 2009, 08:20:57 pm
oki here's what im thinking. i have a 93 chevy g20 conversion van, the brakes just dont cut it. disk front/ drum rear. anyways i found a 1992 3/4 ton suburban with a hydroboost brake system. if i was to take the whole system, powersteering pump, master cylinder, hydroboost system and all lines. whats the chance it would bolt up and work van has a 350 suburban has a 454 might need some brakets also maybe. not sure what all it would entail.
thank you

I would find out why your brakes are not up to your expectations.  There has to be something not working properly.  Maybe the vacuum booster is bad or something on the ABS not up to par.  A G20 should stop fine even though the conversion adds quite a bit of extra weight.

actually had it in the shop not to long ago getting new pads and asked the guy why they are so bad and the mechanic himself refered to the chevy anti-lock brakes as anti-stop brakes. he said that these vans brakes suck and with the added weight they suck even more. since then i have been looking at doing something. i mean they stop the vehicle but not like they should, almost as if the brakes themselfs are to small for the design.

get rid of the anti stop brakes! You must be able to by pass them. I unplugged the rear anti locks on my 91 2500 pick up. It made a big improvement when plowing.

ABS has nothing to do with it unless the dump valve is stuck open or you are actually getting an active abs stop. Take it to a competent mechanic rather than someone who just says they suck because he doesn't know how brakes actually work.

I worked at a GMC dealer when those vans and trucks were still under warrenty.......that mechanic is full of excrement.  I don't remember any vans where the customers complained, I remember the pickup after 1988 going through the GM pads at a pretty good clip.  Check the option data tag to see which brake options your van has, it might just be a standard brake vehicle with a few extra pounds added.  I think there is some wrong in the system.

oki here is the latest, dealer says working as intended but they dont feel like they have as much stopping power is because they are small 10.5" rotors and single piston calipers, dont remember what he said for the drums but there small also. asked about hydroboost said it will perform the same the petal will just feel different, he talked about upgrading to bigger rotors calipers. but made the point its not a race car. its made as a family cruiser and the brakes should be adequate to stop at a safe distance.

just swap engines and put a Ford engine in it, the brakes will be fine.
